On another note, I still find Elizabeth Lail to be pretty dang annoying. There’s this presence to her on screen in this show that is so simpering and demure and meek. The guilt trip with the cookies she gave to Jessie was the first time she had any sort of personality.
Yeah I know the writing is so great, but the other actors are doing a much better job than she is.

So let me get this straight. Adam and Eddy are actually capable of writing a fairly nuanced, complex, emotional character episode about being “otherized” by society and those closest to us, that doesn’t feel token and like it will be easily dismissed in the next moment?
But when it comes time to write an LGBT story for their lead show, their baby that they worked on for 10 years, and they gave us “Ruby Slippers”????
Look, it’s not like this episode was revolutionary. Yeah, it’s a bit heavy handed with its mask metaphors and weird masqueraded balls in the middle of the woods but Drew’s story—a character we’ve only sat with for 3 episodes–was actually rather touching and realistic–grounded in the experiences that trans people face all the time. But Red, a character we’ve known for 5 years got a five second, second hand love story before being shipped to forgotten character island??
SIGH
Other notes
–Deb and Joel are just straight up weird and I’m not sure where they are going with this.
–Jessie is the worst and even with her whole “my home life was messed up and I trusted wrong people” speech, I simply don’t care.
–Okay, so it’s was pretty obvious that Blair came out because of “Andrea” and the Bowie tape (and that’s a bit low, tapping into the death of a beloved icon) but it was pretty sweet too. I like Blair. He’s slowly being toned down so that he’s not just “super gay!”
–The mythology did nothing for me this week. But giant hand is giant hand!

I’d also say that this is the best episode of DoS by far. I guess something to keep in mind is that Adam and Eddy didn’t write “Ruby Slippers”, as that was written by Andrew Chambliss and Bill Wolkoff. That’s not to say that “Ruby Slipeprs” would have necessarily been better if Adam and Eddy had written it themselves, but who knows. One thing that is certainly in DoS favor is that it does not have magic everywhere to over-rely on. There are supernatural elements, but I wouldn’t say it’s incorporated in a way that cheapens any character or plot development. At least not so far.

How on Earth can they pull THIS off, but then give me Ruby Slippers? I feel like I completely understand Drew and all it took was one heart-felt amazing episode.
And I still don’t find the actor that plays Blair to be annoying. In fact, I too kind of like Blair. And again as RG put it, they toned him down a bit which I appreciate.
Big weird hand in water? Ok…. Deb doing Joel in the woods? Ok…. I also have no idea where they are going with here. Did Deb say that her great grandfather or whatever is that creepy piano playing back guy that’s been hovering around (aka the tall man). Did she not say Joel reminded her of him? I may have misheard this part, but if that’s true, that is a small reveal for Deb’s character.
And I always assumed the “demon spirit” was the tall man. With the creepy ritual guys grabbing his bones and what not, I thought they were trying to bring HIM back. But with this big hand coming out of the water and what not, is the tall man just trying to resurrect this “demon” too? And what if they do? What’s the point of all of this? Does the demon just kill everybody? I’m not getting the overarching motivation here, and it’s something they need to address soon.
Side note: They had the demon be able to possess the worst actress on the show– because she can portray dull-faced with no emotion so well haha.

I honestly can’t tell you because I was too busy thinking “plz don’t have sex in the woods; plz don’t have sex in the woods”

Did they die? If they’re not dead yet then they probably will be by the end of the season because in horror franchises people who have sex always die.
Is this actually a Friday the 13th: the early years or something else that doesn’t live up to the expectation of what we were sold?
All magic comes with a price!

It has the camp and horror setting, but not really. It’s more supernatural and psychological horror. It’s in no way a slasher, which Friday the 13th was. So far the myythology is pretty different, too. Adam & Eddy also admitted that they took elements from non horror 80s films too, like the John Hughes ones. Elizabeth Lail’s character even has Hughes’ surname.
July 21, 2016 at 6:00 pm #325753RumplesGirlKeymasterGiven the channel and target audience I rather doubt that any of the main campers (Blotter was actually just a guest star) will die. Even Amy, should she be possessed by Giant Hand In Lake, will make it.

–I find it very hard to believe that with all the weird stuffing going on, including drug dealer/murderers hanging out in the woods, the camp counselor decided it was a really good idea to go camping in said woods with a bunch of pre-teens.
–Amy is reading a manual on how to toast a marshmallow. Good lawd, y’all.
–Garrett found a ring with JS and instantly says it belongs to his father even though he never the cabin existed until a few days ago. Because the letters J and S are pretty uncommon and couldn’t possibly belong to anyone else.
–I feel like I still don’t know Joel as a character even after this flashback. He never once came off as having visions or perhaps some sort of psychosis. A flashback is supposed to help me understand the character more but I feel like they shoved a random “issue” on to Joel so they could do something with Joel in the present day. For example, Cricket’s insecurities and need for validation from Alex made sense once we saw her flashback. Even Alex’s hyper-all-American-boy shtick made sense once we saw who he really was. For Joel, he says that the camera is the only way he could tell what’s real or not, but in the flashback we saw that he was interested in film making and recording everything around him before his brother died and before Joel himself saw the Tall Man. I just feel like I have nothing to latch on to when it comes to Joel. He’s not actually crazy since Holyoak is real so….what else is there for him?
–RIP Cricket. I do appreciate that they showed that the danger is real and that they intend to follow through on the Tall Man’s threats.
