Thanks for the link.
The concept of one true love has been promoted in the show since the very first episode. I’m surprised that some people haven’t caught on yet. It’s one of the show’s most recognizable themes.

For cryin out loud … I don’t question that Belle is Rumple’s true love. I question the concept of just ONE true love ever possible in someone’s life, and thus what the nature of the relationship between Rumple and Cora might have been at some point in their shared history.
Adam and Eddie have already confirmed that each character can only have one true love. Only one.
Where, when did they state that? Source please. I really would like to know.
If so: Then they better kill Ruby this Sunday, because things look really grim for her then. And no hope there for Regina ever, poor Evil Queen, but she can still try to find true love to her adopted son. Oh, right, Peter was maybe not Red’s true love just her first love, big difference. And same for Regina. Whatever each prefers to believe in.
Sorry when I am getting cynic here, but I honestly believe that the concept of only one true love in life is creating more problems than doing any good. And for story telling it creates plenty of plot holes, one later has desperately to fanwank away. (And I have over 20 years of experience of explaining the unexplainable to make stories in my fav shows work against all reason and within their own logic. so try me) 😈
Actually, trying to insert real world rules and ethics into a show about magic creates an awful lot of plot holes as well. Like I said in my previous post, this is a show about fairytales and a good portion of them are modeled after the Disney versions of those fairytales. Trying to judge the show by real world standards isn’t going to work. Trying to make a fantastical concept like magic make sense is kind of useless. Magic will never make sense because it doesn’t really exist.

Was getting a little concerned that maybe I was the only one having hot dreams about him. Not just Bobby or Gold, but RUMPLE!!!! 😆 😆 😆 At least it’s out in the open and I now know that I’m not alone in my lust for a little green man! 😀

March 9, 2013 at 6:49 am #178435AtlanticaDreamParticipantI think in one of the official podcasts, they said that the idea of if one person can only have one true love is something that they want to explore (and maybe about that being sad if it was the case but don’t quote me on that part).
In terms of people falling in love with opposites or similar people to them, in psychology there is both. We generally fall in love in terms of similarity– the match between our interests, background, attitudes, and values and those of the other person. However, people can become bored with this. And it is often the case that we have propinquity with them, we come across them more often, and have more opportunities to fall in love with them.
When we fall in love with those that are our opposites it initially seems exciting and interesting, but can become problematic. However, if you develop similar interests then this is no longer the case.
Took this out of my social psychology textbook on interpersonal attraction. Whether this is relative to this show or not I’m not sure. However I hope that for example, Hook and Regina can find another true love.. because if not then its just going to be depressing lol
As far as Rumbelle, I originally didn’t see it, but once I saw the sneak peek I must say I officially see it lolProud Keeper of the Dinglehoppers

Yes, I remember hearing them discuss that in their podcast, though don’t recall which one it was to easily look up their actual quote.

I do remember what Red192 mentioned about the creators wanting to explore the idea of what happens when you’ve lost your true love but they haven’t said anything about it being impossible and we know of very few cases on the show that they’ve actually called or we’ve seen magical evidence of true love.
I would include in these: Snowing (wakes from sleeping curses), RumBelle (Dark One curse), and Aurora & Phillip (wakes from sleeping curse – what is their shipper name??). These have been proven through magical means.
I made a point to not include any that have not been shown to us as definitive true love. That includes Ruby & Peter, Regina & Daniel (it clearly affected her, could have been, but I don’t remember any proof other than her want of revenge which leads to…), Hook & Milah (again, centuries of wanting revenge, has the tattoo, and yes Rumple suggested it was “twue luv” when Hook protected Milah by not saying she was alive and Milah tried to protect him but no magical proof).
So I hold out hope that those still living who have lost their exes to death are not lost souls forever. The show has shown what true love is capable of and it’s positive stuff. For the time being I hold the others as screwups and if they can manage to change their ways they will hopefully find true love. (This would include Red, Regina, and Hook).
I’m sure I’m leaving a lot of people out but things have definitely been hinted at or seen that some of these people have moved on or tried to move on and just haven’t had much luck (*cough* Red *cough*) and the writers are always saying they’re interested to see IF some of these people can turn their lives around and maybe find love again.

March 9, 2013 at 8:15 am #178441MyrilParticipantI am not merely judging by real world standards (there is plenty of ficion out there questioning the one and only love concept as well), that is not what I said. I said in OUaT Fairy Tales, and should add in the way they have been mostly perceived, have to face a world without magic, without the wondrous ways happy endings seem to be guaranteed (at least for some). In OUaT fairy tales have to face our world where one has to work hard for happiness and happy endings might not happen, or should have said a world alike our real world, because very sure I know that is not a documentary of our world. It’s fiction, of course.
The fantastic element in fiction is not there to deny our reality but to play with it, to offer different and eventually new ways of seeing life. Beyond all fantastic elements, fantasy has at its core human behavior, human psyche.
So far I haven’t perceived OUaT as stating, there is just one true love in life, they leave it open for interpretation. I am glad they do, because it makes in my opinion a way more interesting story telling and offers characters to identify with, their search, their struggles, them finding answers to questions we all have without claiming it’s the only ever possible answer. I am not denying that for individuals it might be possible that there is just one true love they ever will find and have in their lives, but I question the concept to be true in general for everybody, be it in fiction or in real life, as a rule of nature, fate, destiny, whatever.
Lana said on that panel in 2012, one has only one true love in Fairy Tale Lands – and that was something she assumed to explain to herself, make it accessible for herself why Regina reacted so full of hate to young Snow. It’s an interpretation.
Red192 – Kitsis&Horowitz talked about it in the podcast after episode 2×08 “Skin Deep” (podcast chapter 11, at about minute 15:00). It was an answer to a question via twitter, if there is only one true love. Their answer was: it’s a great question, and “a theme that we’re probably going to explore at some point on the show. Wether or not somebody can have true love I think depends on the circumstances.” (Eddy Kitsis) They explicitly talked then about Regina, and Eddy said: “I would hate to live in a world without the hope that you could fall in love again if you lost someone you loved already.” Adam Horowitz added that they like to explore the nature of love on the show and not just the romantic kind.
And because I have the feeling I have to make that very, very clear: It’s the concept of ONE true love I am questioning, not the idea of true love. Subtle big difference.
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯
March 9, 2013 at 12:14 pm #178447spinninggoldParticipantAdam & Eddie said “Soul Mate” guys, not true love, and I think they have a point though Cora would be soul mate to the Dark One and not Rumpel… Heck if Cora could ever meet peasant Rumpel, she’d crush him like… a snail. Soul mate and Twue Wuve are not the same.
*Goes dr Phil on you for a second* See True Love is true love, and Corrumpel clearly did not achieve that, because Rumpel is stil as corrupted as can be.
The way someone one dr Phil actually explained it was that there were two types of Soul Mates. The one where you lift each other up and bring eachother to great heights (Rumbelle) and the one where you destroy eachother and take eachother down in a downward spiral (Corrumpel)
I mean look at it, they are just as bad as eachother in their quest for power/magic, Cora might even be worse, although we do not know how much of this is actually down to what Rumpel feeds her in the beginning. But Rumpel’s dark side and Cora are definately kindred spirits that find eachother in this.
Let’s not analyse Adam and Eddie’s words to death. Soon we will make them afraid to say anything because someone may overinterprate it… And they will stop giving us spoilers all together 😯
… or they are doing it to get arise outta us… and they are laughing their butts off right now.Rumpel is SEXY! WOOT! WOOT!
March 9, 2013 at 12:36 pm #178448RumplesGirlKeymasterI’m just gonna jump in here with the “one true love thing”
Just because you only have one true love, it doesn’t mean you can’t love many people. Obviously Hook and Regina found their one true love but something terrible happened, but they are capable of loving again. And it can be just as deep and fulfilling as Milah/Daniel. But, I think, the reason true love gets so much attention is because of its power, namely in breaking curses. It’s like when Charming was in the red room and could only be woken up by Snow, it had to be TLK.
I know it’s something they want to explore and who knows: maybe they’ll flesh it out so that you can have more than one? Take Emma for instance: mother’s TLK woke up Henry, but some might say Neal is her true love, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t have feelings for Graham or won’t have feelings for Hook.
And I think you even made a similar point when you wroteThey explicitly talked then about Regina, and Eddy said: “I would hate to live in a world without the hope that you could fall in love again if you lost someone you loved already.” Adam Horowitz added that they like to explore the nature of love on the show and not just the romantic kind.
Of course you can fall in love again after your one true love die or somethgn! Regina and Hook would be totally screwed if you couldn’t. But again, if you can have more than ONE true love, I think it cheapens those that have already found one true love. Like Snowing. Does that mean that Charming has another one true love out there? Does Snow? It opens that door and frankly that worries me. How many episodes in season one was one true love or TLK harped on? Many many many.
Also, Myril: I’m sorry if you felt like we (or I) jumped on you for questioning Rumbelle. This is the sad reality of shows like this, when you ship, you ship hard and if it happens to be your OTP (as Rumbelle is for me) you tend to come down hard. Sorry for that. These boards are supposed to be fun places for open and honest discussion and sometimes things get heated.
In regards to what you said about Ruby: we don’t actually know that Peter was her one true love. He could have been, but from just that one episode all we know is that they were boyfriend/girlfriend and cared for each other a great deal. But, for all we know, her one true love hasn’t been discovered yet.In other news: its Saturday. Miller’s Daughter is tomorrow. REJOICE.
