It just made me think they are not “pairs” but separate characters who aren’t necessarily in romantic relationships with the other characters.

I agree!!!
Now I feel dumb! I guess it is all the same sex couple thing that so many viewers are pushing that made me think that.
I think everything is debatable and in 4 weeks we’ll find out.
