The names in SB & FTL are starting to crossover a lot now. Why do you think that is?

Regina has the same name in both worlds. Snow White came up with the Mary/Margaret alias for herself before she went to Storybrooke. David became Prince James (his alias) in FTL and then resumed his real name in SB. Everyone else’s name seems to be derived to reflect their personalities. Derived by the writers, in real life. But in the show did the curse pick those names or did, as we saw in this episode, those characters pick those names for themselves at various times?

In real life haven’t all of us have thought of aliases for ourselves? Asked your parents what other names they thought of giving you before they chose (Gwendolyn instead of Catherine), or heard a name you really liked and thought ‘I wish that was my name,” (My mom want’s to be a Veronica) or just thought about going by your middle name or a nickname instead of your first name. Anyway, in FTL Snow had a real opportunity to choose a different name for herself. (I think it was interesting and significant that she went from such an usual name as Snow to such a common one was Mary since she chose that herself. I wonder if she wished for a normal name like that in the past.)

Eh. This isn’t a practical explanation for everyone. (I don’t think Mr. Gold chose that name in FTL or SB and I don’t think Jimminy called himself Archie or Hopper in FTL either) But anyone that actually went by an alias in FTL like David and Snow might get to keep that alias in SB… which means they got the special privilege of having some control over their name. Regina got to have her say because she is the one who enacted the curse. I wonder why Rumple didn’t get to have his say, since he remembers. Maybe he didn’t remember all along, only just learned it?

Am I talking nonsense? I’m gonna go to bed now. xD

I also think it is interesting that Snow picked Mary to be called and that she said Margarat and then that is her name in the real world. I also like the idea that Charming’s name really is David in the real world. Maybe their names were somehow created by themselves when the curse happened since they all seem to reflect who they are in fairytale land. And maybe David was given his own real name because his memories were not full integrated because he was in a comma and they only happened later on. That is a good theory.

It’ll be interesting if we ever get a flashback episode when everyone woke up in the real world, how they were given their name? Was it the curse or did everyone just wake up with a name in mind, and that became their name? I doubt that they were able to choose their RL names.

I think it just sort of happened as a mechanism of the curse. I can’t see EQ sitting down with a chart and making up new names for people. (And if she did, I would think they would be mean names. Snow would have been Jezebel or Slush or something.) I would just see them waking up with knowledge of their names, just as they knew where they lived and what jobs they had.

I’m just seeing hat scene in my head. Regina sitting in that long chair (How is that thing called again? Like a sofa, but only has a back on one corner.) of hers with a clipboard and asking the Genie what name he wants and making up names for everyone else. 😆

I also think that it is a mechanism of the curse. I was just wondering if the curse knows them all in some way or if it is reading them somehow because the names are not just coincidence. And i agree. I doubt very much that Regina is sitting down making a list of their names.

I don’t know if I explained myself very well. I don’t think that everyone got to consciously pick their names in Storybrooke or anything. Just that the curse apparently decided to use some people’s aliases, which were aliases chosen by them. So in a way some of them got to choose their names. I just think that’s interesting.

Sort of like the ‘Twilight Zone.’ But that’s a funny image of the Evil Queen coming up with names for them. Calling Snow White ‘Slushy’ which would be a good name for her if she were a dwarf but there are no female dwarfs.

If EQ did choose the names, I find it interesting she didn’t give Gold a first name. A sign of respect, perhaps? Or perhaps she did give him a first name and has never revealed it….I’m more unlined, though, to think each person chose his own name and Gold has never told anyone what first name he selected because of the names-knowing-means-power-over-the-person thing.
