It is in this episode that the theme of all magic has a price presents itself best.

As Cinderella walks with James, Thomas, and Grumpy, through the mines that have now been converted into a type of jail to keep Rumpelstiltskin in and Grumpy open the box with the quill that has the blue fairies magic spell, to explain their trap, Cinderella reiterates what she has learned — that all magic comes with a price and what if the use of the quill exacts a price as well, to which Thomas replies, “I will pay it, I will do whatever is needed to save you and our child.”

So I am thinking that his disappearance at the well (whether a frog or not we have yet to see) was the price of using that magic. What do you think?
