Once Upon a Time glossary – fanspeak, acronyms…

We defined Canon in our glossary. But it mean that it is “law” more or less. So Snowing is canon, Rumbelle is canon. Swanfire and CaptainSwan are not canon because they haven’t been shown to be end game.

AU means alternate universe. Here it means couples that people put together in fanfiction or art or videos for the fun of it or because they like the idea of the couple. Hook and Jefferson, for example are an AU ship.

Well, there’s a difference between a canon relationship, canon TRUE LOVE, and canon end game.

I mean, Killian and Milah were definitely a canon ship. Possibly True Love (Rumple said it, so…maybe). End game? Only for Milah. Killian’s clearly gonna have a second chance at romance.

So I think you can argue that Swanfire/Swanthief has canon status–they’ve said I love you in both past and present–but that doesn’t mean it’s endgame.

Canon for me means that it’s been shown to be a romantic relationship on the show–overtly, not just hints. So I’d say that Swanfire is/was canon, Captain Swan not quite (yet). No way to tell which (if either) is endgame yet.

Like it says in our glossary, it’s a highly contentious term. I agree that SwanFire have had canon moments, but I don’t know if they’re canon yet. Just like CS has also had canon like moments but aren’t yet. But yes, there is a differene between Canon and true love and canon+true love. Rumbelle and Snowing are canon+true love. Also, canon can refer to things other than shipping. So, it’s canon that Cora removed her own heart and it’s canon that she is the QoH. There is no more debate on that.

Yeah, Swanfire is canon on the show because they’ve had a past relationship. They’re not currently romantically canon, but the ship at one point did exist on the show.  Henry is proof of that 😉  I wouldn’t classify their relationship status as current, though.  So my official pronouncement is that it’s canon that they had a past relationship.

I suppose that gets more into what the ship names mean than anything else, then–rather than what canon means.

    Hahaha shipping is dangerous stuff!

PS wait till I finish my ships grid and you guys can have fun tearing that apart.

Actually, since we’re talking about it! If people want me to break down our “canon” definition in the glossary differently, or maybe suggest alternative definitions or want me to add “shipcanon” or “canon end game” please let me know. I’d like for that glossary page to be shiny and pretty and happy. Right now, it’s pretty good but I know there are lots of things (like canon) that are so complex you almost need different words.

Well, I think “endgame” is a good concept to add! I didn’t see anything wrong with your definition on the glossary page for canon, but I kinda object to saying that Swanfire’s not canon when they’ve been in a clearly romantic/sexual relationship in the past and said ILUs right before Emma thought he died. That doesn’t make them endgame, but it definitely makes them a canon relationship at LEAST as much any other short of TLK, certainly on par with Regina/Daniel and others where a party has perished. And of course since one is gravely injured and the other believes him dead, it’s not canon that Emma thinks she’s in a relationship with him right this second.

And yeah, I’m really wrestling with these definitions cuz I’m trying to chart how all the characters in the show are related to each other. It’s, um, a big chart. Not quite the size of the timeline, but…

But you really can’t determine Canon End Game until the series is completely finished.

I think the definition is okay.  If it hasn’t aired, it’s not canon.  I remember in the HP fandom that if JKR didn’t write it then it wasn’t canon.  Even the movies aren’t canon because they’re written by a screenwriter and not her.  They’re not original source material.

You can’t, no, but endgame is a term that gets thrown around a lot in shipping. And a lot of people assume that Snowing and Rumbelle are endgame (I’m not gonna get into the SQ claims…*backs away slowly*) because of TLK and the centrality of the characters.
