In case anybody else was confused like I was, Andrew Chambliss has addressed some questions:

it happened during the Dark Curse. Liam aged because, as he says, Nemo took him outside the bounds of the curse's magic

Hook stayed in Enchanted Forest which was under the time freezing magic of the Curse. Nemo and Liam went outside its bounds

Now, from my understanding, it was established back in “Broken” that time started moving again in the realms earlier than when Emma actually broke the curse:

Mulan: This corner of the land was untouched. No one knows why. But something saved us. And, for twenty-eight years, we were frozen. And then… Time started again. The terrible curse’s power was weakened. Phillip and I were able to resume our search. We found you. But the land is ravished with dangers more fearsome than you can imagine. For those of us who remain, we found a safe haven. We must go there now.

So I think this flashback takes place after Emma agrees to stay in Storybrooke at the end of the Pilot, but about roughly a year till Emma broke the curse.

    Okay then. I’ll accept that.

(the fact that we constantly need claification on this sort of stuff speaks volumes, just saying).

Yeah, I agree. I think the writers do think about a lot of these things when planning out episodes, but the main problem is that they’re not explained clearly enough. That’s still a writing flaw in itself.

Meh. I was never a fan of the idea that they were physically frozen under the bubble (I mean, it’s a type of protection spell!).

….I thought ALL lands were frozen for 28 years? No? Uh, okay. Hmm…. Gotta admit, that makes the dark curse less threatening. I always thought that 1) the curse was inescapable and 2) Nothing could stop it and 3) every land would be effected.

None of those things are true.

So honestly….why exactly did Snowing even have to go through all they went through if the solution was as simple as getting out of the curses boundaries or going to another land? I know going to a land without magic is hard, but going to other worlds seems a little more doable especially if you know ancient fairies and stuff. And its not like they didn’t know about the curse beforehand, they were preparing for it. No one could poof them over to Arendelle for the weekend? No one could offer up a mirror to Wonderland or fly them to Neverland for an hour after they saw the curse coming?

The dark curse is really losing its effectiveness for me.

    This! All of this!!!

I’m still a little lost on how Regina managed to pull Jefferson out of Wonderland, but everyone else remained untouched.

I think your confusion confuses me. All lands were frozen for 28 years. Hook and Cora were inside the Bubble–frozen–which prevented them from being sucked up into the Curse and taken to SB. When Emma decided to stay in SB (the Pilot) time began to move again and the characters inside the Bubble could move as well, and apparently Hook spent that time on the JR, which also explains is quip about Smee (who WAS taken by the Curse). So this flashback takes place during S1 sometime , after episode 1 but before Emma TLK’d Henry and broke the curse.

But Chambliss claims Nemo and Liam went “outside the bounds” of the time-freezing effect?

And wasn’t Arendelle explained by having the entire kingdom frozen in ice for the duration of the curse? Time itself still moved there.

You’re right….I forgot he wrote that.

    *sigh* I don’t know.

But how could Liam be in his….early 20s? He was a child when we last saw and i doubt that much time had past between Hook killing his papa to the curse being casted.

Idk. Im just going to go with it for the sake of the story i guess.
