Adam Horowitz tweeted this yesterday:

Excited to welcome Ethan Embry to the #OnceUponATime party. We’re longtime fans of his and we’re thrilled he’s coming aboard for a spell.I think the word “spell” really does spell it out for us. A sorcerer or wizard? Possibly Merlin or the Wizard of Oz. Oh, how these writers make my mind whirl and twirl!
Addendum: He also played a character named Frick in the 2011 TV mini series The Witches of Oz.

October 28, 2012 at 4:21 pm #158275naomiParticipantWhoa – that would be interesting! A “wizard” who actually has no magic? Or perhaps a would-be “wizard” who wants to get magic? I could see that fitting well with the rumor of the outside visitor arriving in Storybrooke…
But are we thinking that this new character is “Barrett”?
“A major recurring guest star role with an option for next season is being cast. A character named Barrett. He’s in his 30s, kind and smart, but also has a very dark side and has beliefs and a way of life that he will fight fiercely to defend.”
The timing is right (3 weeks after the announcement) for that character to be cast. If so, I wonder how the Wizard of Oz story could work, if he’s trying to defend his beliefs or way of life…eager to hear thoughts!
And since I didn’t see photos posted yet:
Ethan Embry! What do you guys think? Does he look like a wizard? An elf? A priate? A pan? A…Bae? (<--) LOL.

I knew Ethan Embry looked familiar! He played Bobby Ray in Sweet Home Alabama! I really like the idea that he’ll go by Barrett, since the timing is right. I really don’t think he’ll be Baelfire though, because of his coloring (although I have to be careful because that’s why people said August couldn’t be adult Pinocchio). I do think “Barrett” will be his SB identity and that he’ll be some kind of magical warlock in FTL, based on Adam Horowitz’s hint about a “spell.” Merlin is a good guess. I’m not sure if he’s the Wizard of Oz, who wasn’t a real wizard. He was just a common Midwestern guy."That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. When you leave it, there’s this feeling that you can’t shake. You just miss it." Neal Cassidy

I mean he’s supposed to be a regular guy (possibly from our world) who TRAVELS TO the Land of Oz… And becomes famous essentially because he can put on one heck of a good show. They say this guy is a stranger who comes to Storybrooke… So I could see him coming to Storybrooke and everyone makes a huge deal out of him, because WOW! No strangers EVER come to Storybrooke unless they’re important (read: Emma, Pinocchio). So he becomes the Wizard of Storybrooke… And perhaps him and a mystical hot air balloon are what Charming and the gang need to get back to realms of magic?

Yes, I think that’s very possible! I posted the same theory in a 2×5 thread Who is Dr. Whale’s brother.

Maybe Victor’s brother ended up getting away from their homeland, and Victor won’t have to go find him, coz he’s gonna come to SB instead?

Maybe he’s the one that kills a Storybrooke resident where Ruby gets blamed.

Only problem is, if he’s sorta psycho like Daniel was, I don’t see how he could become a recurring character, because Daniel had to be killed.
PS. I’ve gotta laugh that the first guy cast in forever who doesn’t have Bae’s hair, and we’re still getting caught up on other characters he looks like. 😆
