I’m about to rewatch Red-handed and I finally remembered what Granny mentioning six brothers reminded me of. In “The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids” there’s this family of seven little goats and their mother. The mother goes out and tells the kids to watch out for the wolf and not open the door. As kids are, they obviously don’t listen, open the door and all hide. One by one the wolf finds and eats them. The only one he can’t find, is the yougest goat. The wolf rests on a meadow and when the mother comes home the little goat tells her what happened, she gets her sewing sat and she cuts open the wolf’s belly. The kids get out and search for rocks, which they put in the wolf’s belly. He is then drowned.
The six brothers and Granny – making seven children – could be a reference to this story.

I’ve also read that story. You are totally correct, I’m sure they were referencing that.

I just re-watched the episode over the break and another reference that seems obvious to me now is to Snow White and Rose Red. Now that we have seen the story in Henry’s book several times it stands out. From the moment Snow and Red meet in the chicken coup, to every other scene where they are outside in their respective red and white cloaks, if you mute the sound, you would think you are watching the story of Snow White and Rose Red instead of Red Riding Hood.

Visually, they seem to have made the reference very obvious.

In the story, one of the girls married the prince (James perhaps) and the other married his brother (maybe his brother isn’t dead afterall) The first Prince James and his Shepherd brother are the only brother Princes so far in FTL. Or maybe they will never actually tell the story, they just like it in the book!!

Gonna re-watch this ep this weekend. I’ll try to remember to watch out for it! 🙂

You know, the funny thing with the story of Snow White and Rose Red is, that the option to make Snow the same as in Snow White is only managable in English and a couple of other languages? In German they actually have two different names – meaning the same, really, but different so to separate them.

Four days not able to come on on the forums and there’s sooooo much to read! 😕
