YouTube is your best friend when crafting. My mom taught me to knit years ago but it wasn’t until after she passed on that I really got into it. She wasn’t there anymore to show me how to do something so I turned to YouTube. It helped me learn new stitches, follow patterns and understand new techniques. I know RG learned to crochet because of YouTube.
One thing beneficial about learning online is that being a southpaw I can learn from fellow lefties. If I would find someone to show me how to do stitches, they’d more than likely do it right-handed. But thanks to the internet, other lefties have posted videos to help and aid. Anything you want to do you can find it online.
I grew up with a mother who did everything craft related from crochet to quilting to leather crafting. She even had her own photography dark-room. So I’ve done a lot of stuff. I also as mentioned make dollhouses and miniatures. The benefit of knitting, though, is it’s portable. I take it to the laundromat (I always get someone come up to me talking and in awe as I’m knitting…little things amaze people) or to work, and I knit as I watch tv or even work on the computer since I can do a lot of work without even looking at it or set it down frequently in my lap and pick it back up . Then there are periods I don’t knit for a week or more. But there is always satisfaction when you’ve completed a project no matter what the craft.

But there is little that’s as rewarding as seeing a vision through to completion.

Yup. Taught myself through videos. It was a lot of trial and error.
Watcher, I would suggest starting with something slow and simple. Buy some light colored yarn (like a blue) and a hook (I’d say an “I”–5.5 mm) and just start with the basics of crochet–a chain, single crochet, a small square.

I’ve been sewing and cosplaying for about 12-13 years now, and I’m literally in a program for theatrical costuming right now, so sewing and pattern making is pretty much the only think I do 80 hours a week right now… But yeah, if you go that route feel free to give me a shout, and as long as I’m not buried under a mountain of my own sewing homework, then I’d be glad to help out.
On a minorly related note, last night I was working on a project for my textiles class and I’m super proud of it. Look at my tree!
It’s different shades of dye painted directly on canvas, and then the tree is a stencil I made and coloured in with brown and black oil paint crayons. I still have to bleach out parts, but my tree!Co-Mayor of Sad Town | Twin of Co-Mayor of Sad Town | #HopeforRogueBison

WOW!!!!!! Very impressive.

Yeah, you need a colour that lets you see the individual stitches in the lighting conditions that you’ll be working under. Light-coloured yarn is a lot easier to work with than dark yarn in dim artificial light.
Variegated (self-striping) yarn can also help, and it’s interesting to see how the colour bands align in the finished work (wide stripes, narrow stripes, abstract blobby shapes,…).

November 15, 2014 at 9:16 pm #290265JosephineParticipantAnother bit of advice is make sure your yarn is a different color than your hook or needles. Starting out that can be frustrating when they’re the same color.
Text, your tree is fabulous. It looks really great.
I’m just getting into sewing. I had to learn how decades ago in Middle School and I knew a little bit about it from my mom and gram, but I’m trying to improve my skills. I got a sewing machine last year for Christmas. I’ve been sewing craft projects like tote bags and purse organizers. Not interested just yet to get into clothing. I’ll stick to the crafty side for now.
On a happy note, I found my missing knitting needle. I was searching for batteries and it was just there. I don’t understand how it got lost from the pack or if it was the fifth one from the pack (I knit with four) but I have enough now to work on my glove once again.

Got the main part of my gloves completed tonight. Now I have to weave in the tons of ends. Argh, I hate that part. Then I’ll knit the mitten cap that goes over the top to make them convertible mittens.
Fuzzy picture with bad lighting, but here’s what I got so far. Best of all they fit. I have really small hands for an adult and so these are specially made to fit my fingers. Can’t wait for them to be finished so I can wear them.
