In the finale Hook mentioned the mermaids two times.
A pirate saved your scrawny bones from the curse of the mermaids.
And anyone who disobeys can walk the plank and pray the mermaids take pity
on his soul! This make me think if mermaids are kind of evil creatures like the sirens. Maybe they drown human to death, when they found them.
But it’s also interesting that he mentions the human soul while talking about mermaids.
Because in the original “The Little Mermaid” fairy tale mermaids don’t have a soul. And technically it’s what the little mermaid got in the end of the tale. The opportunity to earn an immortal soul as an air spirit and not the prince.[adrotate group="5"]“There were thousands and thousands of forms of joy in the world, but that all were essentially one and the same, namely, the joy of being able to love.”

I think the mermaids, for the most part, are going to be creatures who despise humans and drown sailors when they get the chance. The exception to this will be a certain Little Mermaid who loves mankind and wants to save them from her family. I just don’t know how they’ll fit into the NL storyline yet.

In the Disney cartoon version of “Peter Pan”, the mermaids “playfully” tried to drown Wendy. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if most mermaids aren’t very friendly. As for “The Little Mermaid” I think she could be the exception to the rule and even want to leave the hostile environment of the merfolk for a better life on land. I think we’ll get happy ending for Ariel though that is more in keeping is the Disney version than the story written by Hans Christian Anderson.

Peter Pan wise, the mermaids were always pretty frightening if I remember correctly. Maybe the mermaids REALLY despise humans and Ariel is one of the few who don’t. then she falls for one and all that. Once is getting even more interesting 🙂 *rambling* either way, the mermaids have a pretty bad rep and I can’t wait to see what their like.

They drown the pirates, cause the would think they will kill them. They are not trusting somebody from above, like the giants did. (and common, they would have reasons for it) Theya re worried about their families and lifes, except for one of course.
“(Maybe he’s right. Maybe there is something the matter with me. I just don’t see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad.)
What was also little bit confusing in the final was that Regina didn’t know the map of Neverland but in Skin deep she takd about “certain mermaid”, that would mean they exist more than one magical realm. That could mean that in FL are mermaids they trust the people (Ariel) and NL mermaids who drown them (Lorelei in Germany), but in FL we see sea creatures who weren’t really nice too, so I think they are like humans and are bad, good and most of the time something in between.
On person suggested that the waters in all realms are connected. The well in SB, the lake Nostos in FL and maybe we see something similar in NL too. The ink was on the bottomless ground of the ocean. Maybe the special waters are like tunnels for magic that connect the realms and the ink was in the center. If our land is disconect with this water system magic can’t go to our land in the normal way, but a long time ago we had magic too and only lost it… OK I know I going too far now … but I have nothing to distract my head of spinningHeros don't get their Happy Ending!

Look at this stuff. Isn’t it neat? Wouldn’t you think my collections complete…
Wait. What were we talking about??
Right. Evil mermaids. I think a large of part of them drowning sailors is out of fear, as it was for Ariel’s father expressing concern that Ariel would be captured by a fish hook. But the mermaids of NL in PP were also just…mean.

Regina also seemed unfamiliar with Neverland and didn’t even recognize it on the globe.

Yeah, that bothered me. If she had acknowledged NL, then we could basically call Ariel in NL canon. I still think we will see her in Mermaid Lagoon.

Just because Regina is playing nice with the Charmings and Rumple and Hook doesn’t necessarily mean she is going to put all her cards on the table right away. She may reveal later that she has been there and has experience with the mermaids but just because she didn’t acknowledge NL in the finale doesn’t mean she hasn’t been there. At least, not in my mind. 😀
