Regina asked “Who is Jefferson” when Emma mentioned him at the start of this season, when Emma was trying to get the hat to work to save Regina’s life from the wraith. Regina isn’t just reluctant to put her cards on the table, she actively tries to pretend she doesn’t even have any cards. We have to see how far her redemption sticks this time but those kind of old habits die hard sometimes.
As far as mermaids go, I’m wondering what twists they will do. They’ve already created the siren character and the original PP already put the idea out there that mermaids weren’t too nice, but more like wild creatures. Maybe Ariel is enough of a twist there even if a lot of fans are anticipating that. Would they need to do something bigger?
Mermaids were not nice in the original Peter Pan, and we’ve already seen a nasty Siren in Lake Nostros, would they

Instead of killing humans because of fear or generic meanness or something, they kill them because humans equal yummy food. Being drowned by a mermaid would be scary enough. Being eaten by one would be so much worse.

So many ideas to play with there from the title–there’s a thread on the forums on how one must “never” land or you can’t escape, how it is a land where there’s never time, but maybe there’s a story of how there was never land there in this world until PP and his shadow minion/followers showed up. So maybe the mermaids aren’t the evil ones at all, just displaced and looking to regain their home.

The fact that they alluded to mermaids being nasty pieces of work who will kill you if they catch you in the water is the perfect setup for Ariel being the exception to the rule.

So very true! One of my current lines of thinking about Regina’s NL connection is that maybe she’s the one who brought the squid ink back for Rumple, but that’s not a fully formed theory yet, just a little idea I’m toying with.

That siren in Lake Nostos was definitely in human form, wasn’t she? Just popped into my head that maybe she was the mermaid that Regina mentioned to Rumple, and maybe Regina resolving that issue is what led to the lake drying up. But I’m pretty sure she always had legs, so that theory may not be workable, unless Regina was using the term “mermaid” very loosely.

Oh I like this! Lots! If Pan and his minions screwed up the world that the mermaids lived in, I could see why they’d wanna snatch up any of the enemy that happened to end up within their grasp.
Actually, to twist your idea around a bit, maybe it was Tiger Lily’s people who were the original NL inhabitants, and the mermaids got along with them just fine, but then Pan came along and wiped them all out, so now the mermaids are bent on revenge? Maybe there’s still a small group of refugees of Tiger Lily’s people hiding out somewhere in NL, and once Pan is overthrown, they’ll be able to come out of hiding and live freely again?

When Alice mentioned mermaids, what seemed to be the Lady of The Lake was swimming on screen. Idk what to make of that but just putting it out there. If they do the mermaids I want human/fish hybrid not just a person in water.

I wouldn’t take that as being representative of mermaids. They just reused a few scenes from Once to make the trailer feel more exciting, and the siren is the closest thing they could show that could pass for mermaids. They had to do this because the spin-off was approved with only 19 minutes worthy of a pilot episode filmed, there’s still a lot of work to do to complete it.
