Are they the same curse?

This is a conversation I’m seeing discussed quite a bit in random places so I figured we could try to organize our thoughts a bit.

The question seems to be is the curse Zelena cast the same curse that Regina cast so many years ago (also known as S1). Basic break down:

Regina’s Curse

• Transported everyone from the EF to SB
• Created the town of Storybrooke
• Erased everyone’s former identities and took away the happy endings
• Time was frozen
• Magic could not be created in Storybrooke, though magical trinkets retained their magic
• Required the heart of the thing the Curse Caster loved most
• Could only be broken by TLK from Emma to Henry

Zelena’s Curse

• Transported everyone from the EF to SB
• (Re)Created the town of Storybrooe
• Erased ONLY the past year in the EF. Everyone remembers who they are AND the time they spent in SB before.
• Time is NOT frozen (Charming states in 313 that the days before Emma arrived here chaos and that people have been going missing. In other words, people are aware of the passage of time).
• Happy endings not necessarily lost. Charming and Snow are not separated for instance
• Magic is in Storybrooke and can be used
• We do not know what was required to cast the curse
• We do not know what will break the curse

 

So are they the same Curse? I don’t think so. I think the curse Zelena cast has more specific than Regina’s and is actually a new but similar curse. It’s possible it did not require a heart at all. In fact I think it may have required the blood of the person Zelena hates most–Regina (hence the blood in the bottle)

So what do you think? Same Curse and Same Casting? Different Curse and Different Casting?

Different IMO. What Zelena’s done isn’t as drastic as what Regina did, she’s just sending them back to where they’d been before with a far less severe case of memory loss, so I’m doubtful that the same heart sacrifice was necessary to enact the reboot.

Definitely a possibility, though I’m also wondering if maybe Regina’s blood was needed to reboot the Curse simply because she’s the one that cast it in the first place. Either way, I think that that bottle of blood potion is essentially taking the place of the bottle of true love potion from the original Curse, which will essentially put Regina in the position Emma was in with the first Curse, as being the one capable of breaking it, (which I think will happen when she kisses Henry after he gets his memories back).

I think Zelena used the same recipe for the first curse but tweaked it a bit to fit her goals. For instance, the original dark curse was meant to remove everyone’s collective memory of FTL (with the exception of Regina and Jefferson) while this new curse is a variation on that old one except that only one year’s worth of memories were lost.

Never thought of that. Hmm. Good point.

I think my line of reasoning is that using the blood of the person she hates most ensures that it’s Regina who suffers more than anyone.

Regina used her father’s heart as a sacrifice to get what she wanted–everyone’s misery

Zelena uses the blood of one specific person to ensure that REGINA is miserable. Yes, everyone else isn’t exactly holding hands and skipping in a circle, but this curse seems to be tailor made to make Regina suffer.

Well when Pan was going to cast the curse, didn’t Rump say that the curse would be different to suit Pans desires. Its possible the curse is different (which is what I think) but its also possible that the curse is the same and they remember everything except the past year and time moves forward simply because Zelena had no use for frozen time and amnesiac cursees.

Well when Pan was going to cast the curse, didn’t Rump say that the curse would be different to suit Pans desires.

Rumple says that the curse Pan in enacting will be per Pan’s desires but it will still operate the same–memory loss, frozen time. Zelena seems to have gotten around that. So either it’s the same fundamental curse but tweeked somehow (blood vs heart for example) it’s a totally different curse.

Maybe one curse requires the heart of the thing you love most, while another requires the blood of the thing you hate most…. Hmm. I’m calling it now 😀

I’m kind of hoping it’s a brand new curse and that it needs to be broken in a completely different way.  I think it is going to get old really fast and will be really boring if we are just sitting around trying to figure out who has to kiss who in order for the curse to be broken.  I mean if TLK is the solution to every curse than everyone should just start kissing everyone else now on the off chance they are True Love but just don’t know it yet until they find the right combination.

I said elsewhere it might be odd if the same as there is magic in the town.  The original curse did not create magic but Rumple modified it with True Love potion.  So  I thinkZelena or someone  deactivated SB from Regina’s curse.

I kind of agree. Like…duh, Regina and Henry will break it. Where’s the shock value in that? Emma kissing almost dead Henry was a gut punch
