Ah well, the waters of Lake Nostos have the magic property of restoring that which was lost but not to open portals. The enchanted wood ashes Snow and Emma used are what contained the magic to portal jump, not the water in and of itself. I’m 99.99% sure that if getting to A Land Without Magic were as simple as taking a swim in Lake Nosots that Rumple would have done so. And since he didn’t have a bean or wardrobe ashes, he created the Dark Curse to be able to travel from the EF to our world. So, I’m fairly confident that water in and of itself (even the magic water of Lake Nostos) is important but not sufficient to realm jump. Whether one is a mermaid or anyone else, she or he would still require the addition of a realm-creating device to travel through water to another realm. So, if mermaids did travel through underwater portals, they would need some sort of additional magic (be it beans or some yet unexplored object).
Bear in mind that not all sources of realm travel could take Rumple to The Land Without Magic; Jefferson’s Hat is one such example. We can expect to see other sources being further introduced in the Onceverse, like the White Rabbit, and just as quick an explanation for why Rumple didn’t use it.

heads-desk. Where is a White Rabbit when you need it? Maybe the rabbit is the menion of the Red Queen so Rumple had no access to using the rabbit. However, the more the mythology grows, the more difficult it is to avoid large holes, and this just seems like a giant sinkhole.
Also, why didn’t Rumple think to track down the last remaining bean from the last giant in the EF? Even Hook managed to do that in a matter of days. Yet in all of his centuries as the Dark One, Rumple never bothered to climb the beanstalk?! He certainly has magic enough to get around the fortification spell that protected the beanstalk. Rumple could have met Tiny and made some deal to get the dried-out old bean and then dipped it in the waters of Lake Nostos himself. Then Rumple would have had no need of the Dark Curse. I’m still scratching my head over that one.
Likewise, Rumple could have just fashioned his own wardrobe out of the last remainging enchanted tree in the EF. How could he have not known about it? He foresaw that Snow would get her child to safety and that Emma would be the savior! Did Rumple not know HOW Emma would be transported between worlds? Surely, Rumple must have had some vision about an enchanted wardrobe! Major loop-hole.
One last rant. Hook’s ship, the Jolly Roger, is the fasted vessel in all the lands, and is fashioned from the same enchanted trees that Geppetto carved Emma’s wardrobe from. So, if Emma’s wardrobe created a portal between realms due to the enchanted wood. So, what is to prevent Hook’s ship, which is carved from the same kind of enchanted wood, to also act as some sort of portal on its own? Why does Hook even need a magic bean to travel between worlds if his ship could potentially be a portal in and of itself? Heads-desk

June 9, 2013 at 2:47 am #197581RumplesGirlKeymasterI have no solution about the White Rabbit or the bean because we know he was trying to find other methods even 10 years before the Curse was enacted (the slippers, for instance).
Maybe he did try to use them? Maybe we’ll get a back story of him going to WL and trying to find the White Rabbit and being thwarted and then trying to get up the beanstalk but again being unsuccessful."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"June 9, 2013 at 4:31 am #197599kfchimeraParticipantMy headcannon is that Rumpel is powerful, but he can be fooled, and is a bit of a pessimist, and there are things he doesn’t know. Regina hid Belle from him afterall.
He didn’t even question Nealfire’s death. Snow says he’s been shot, and Rumpel doesn’t even say “how badly?”. He just was ready to assume the worst. So I think Rumpel kind of only made a token effort to find another way because deep down, he always knew he would have to get someone to do the curse. Besides that, I think Giantland was maybe hidden from him/his seer powers. Cora after all couldn’t just whip up new cuffs, after Hook stole hers, she had to wait for him at the bottom! So whatever went into the cuffs was special enough that she couldn’t make more. Similarly with the WR, perhaps Rumpel could not compel that type of magical creature to aid him, and if he couldn’t make a deal, well, the WR wouldn’t help him if had another master to serve.

Well, we don’t really have 100% confirmation of that last part. I was wondering just the other day if maybe the JR only became enchanted that one time when Hook was allowed to leave NL, and Tink enchanted the JR with pixie dust so it could fly away, and ever since, Hook has been boasting about his ship “made from enchanted wood” to make her sound more impressive. 😉
Of course, it’s also entirely possible that Hook was telling the actual truth, and the JR is in fact made from enchanted wood from magical trees, which I’d also be fine with, because it would likely means there a cool back story to be told about the ship’s origin.
I think that the wardrobe tree had to have something else done to it in order to turn it into a portal, something the BF did to “program” it to go to the right place, it wasn’t merely the fact that it was made of enchanted wood that made the portal possible.

I agree with what Phee said but it might also be that different trees have different enchantment. The last tree Gepetto used was a portal tree, but the tree Hook used–or whoever built the JR–could be a fast tree. We don’t know where the ship came from or who had it built.

As Tinkerbell was for Regina, the nanny was for Snow it is his turn now. How did he know how to swim underwater in that scene with the Siren in the lake, I can’t think of that name of the episode to save my life.
He was a sheep herder normally there isn’t any lakes around for this must be part of his story. 🙂
August 9, 2013 at 6:56 am #203804kfchimeraParticipantI’m confused by your “normally no lakes around” Ranches and Farms, even far away from the ocean, can be near lakes, rivers and ponds. All places you can learn to swim in the normal course of childhood.
It’s possible it is David, lots of things possible right now as we have very little information to rule anything in or anything out for Ariel.

August 9, 2013 at 11:56 am #203868PriceofMagicParticipantThe name of the episode was “What happened to Frederick”
The Siren pulled David underwater plus he dropped his sword, he had no option but to swim underwater other wise he would drown. Ariel doesn’t need to have anything to do with him using common sense. If he’s underwater, at the very least he would need to swim to the surface to breathe.
All magic comes with a price!
