Hmmmmm. I really don’t think Hook is secretly a prince. I think he’s the son of a runaway thief or perhaps even the pirate Davey Jones. Also, I don’t think Hook and Ariel were involved romantically. Hook’s true love was Milha, and I don’t think he ever got over this until maybe Emma. I doubt he had a relationship with a mermaid in NL, especially since Hook said the mermaids were cursed and said he hoped they take spare Bae’s soul. So, at least at that point, Hook didn’t have a high view of mermaids.
Not saying they had a relationship prior. Just that I’m toying with the idea of them having one in the future. And with how we’ve talking about mermaids in other places, we all seem willing to believe that Ariel will be different than the mermaids hinted at by Hook in ASOTM. Ariel could be a new development in NL that has only come on the scene in the years since Hook was in FTL.
I’m not saying in totally on board ship Hookriel, just that I think there has to be more to Hook’s back story than them just telling us in a 2 min conversation.

The same source that leaked Freya Tingley had been cast is the same source for Lanie’s casting. We still don’t know which character Lanie might appear as, but until I read Ariel’s actual casting call, I’m not ruling out Lanie MacNeil as portraying Ariel. She’s the right age for canon Ariel, who was 16 in the Disney cartoon. Of course, Lanie could be Tink, but I just think her age, her hair color, and her eye color all fit Ariel well. Also, Ariel might have had a relationship with one of the Lost Boys, whose casting call is also 16. I could easily see Ariel falling for a kidnapped high-born boy from Victorian England.

Yes the non appearance of Lanie in the season finale was slightly frustrating because I kept expecting her to show up and finally answer our question of “who will she play?”
We’ve had this conversation many times before, but I think she could go Ariel…or she could go Tinkerbell, because both mermaids and fairies were discussed in SSTR.Like I said, just toying with a lot of ideas because I think for them to give us Hook’s back story in a fleeting conversation in the season finale was odd. I didn’t expect that at all. I expect we’ll see it and that there may be more than even Hook knows.

If she needs to learn to swim/ scuba dive etc…. it might make sense for them to cast the actress earlier to give her specialized training.
Probably takes some time to learn how to move naturally whilst wearing a mermaid costume. Probably takes some time to create a custom fit mermaid tail too.

We don’t even know yet if Hook was telling Bae the whole truth though.

My headcanon basically involves endless unrequited love, playing off the idea from the Anderson version of the story where the mermaid’s prince gave his heart to and married someone else. Killian had already given his heart away to Milah, but Ariel didn’t know that until after she’d become human. She’s still in NL, and he’s about to go back, and the romance happens in present day. (I have thought way too much about this ship. 😆 )

I’ve been wondering if someone seeing her was a case of mistaken identity, or perhaps she was one of the Lost Ones, (they did specify Ones as opposed to Boys) and she was one of the people with their faces covered.

I think he’s telling the truth in that he *thinks* he’s telling the truth. If his throne was usurped while he was still a young child, and someone spirited him away and kept him in ignorance his entire life: that’s a fairy tale story. The Lost Prince, that’s a common trope/motif.
So my headcanon goes like this:
–Baby Prince “Hook” (let’s call him Eric 😉 ) has a rival for the throne: his uncle, most likely.
–The uncle has planned to kill Eric.
–A kind woman, probably a servant of Eric’s mother who died in childbirth, spirits Eric away because the evil Uncle has killed the King and is now out to kill the Prince.
–The kind woman raises Eric, but she is in poor health and dies when he is still quite young. Eric (now going by the name Killian) is taken up by a man who is not an honest man and gives him the last name of Jones.
–Killian grows up believing he is Killian Jones, son of Davy.
–Insert the story Killian told to young Bae.Screams fairy tale. And it’s all in my head.

Ah, I totally had an Evil Uncle usurping the throne in some of my ideas for Hook’s history too! Great minds. 😉 I’d be totally fine with it if something like this proved true. I want Killian to have an epic backstory.

It’s always the Uncle. A la Hamlet/The Lion King.

Dude, for real! If only she knew! 😆 😆

You just had to go and make me think of Scar. I hate Scar.
May 16, 2013 at 3:17 pm #194834kfchimeraParticipantI agree Hook should have an epic back story–and I like the idea that what he thinks he knows is different than what actually happened.
I also have thought about this far too much –but I’ve had time as the first Hookriel thing I ever saw was before this season started.
I agree with RG’s responses to Slurpeez’s but want to add some stuff:
@slurpeez108 wrote:
Hook said his father was a fugitive, so I highly doubt Killian Jones is a prince. Even if Hook’s mother was high-born, he still wouldn’t be considered noble because he likely would have been born illegitimately (i.e. a noblewoman wouldn’t marry a fugitive, even if she might sleep with one). A noble title wouldn’t have passed from mother to son anyway, especially not one born out-of-wedlock. Noble titles always passed from father to legitimate first-born son.
What if what made his dad a fugitive WAS the relationship with the mother? Think about Queen Elizabeth I, who reigned without ever taking a husband. She was declared illegitimate after her mother was executed, but eventually got the throne. She also was rumored to have serious romantic interests in a non-royal man (Dudley). The lines of succession were not always clean and clear in history, and we’re talking about a fictional fairy tale land anyway.
Then of course, as a few people have mentioned now, Barrie’s comments that Hook’s real identity would “shock the nation” certainly could play into revising his back story to a fictional realm entirely, rather than fictional London.

I think it could be written a few different ways. The original mermaid stories (Disney or the Andersen) both feature the mermaid as saving the Prince without his knowing it is a mermaid that does so. So that could be how they “met” the first time, so she develops a crush on him that is unrequited but he doesn’t even know he met her. By the time she makes her deal to be human, he could have left NL. So she is stuck pining away for him–until he comes back again in the present to unfold in Season 3.
Regardless if Hook is Eric or not, it doesn’t seem like NL has a lot of “kingdoms” so if Ariel is located there, the writers will have to create some clever twist of how Eric comes into her life if she is in NL. If she’s cast young, it works to make Eric one of the Lost Ones stolen from FTL or another realm. If she’s cast older, then that idea seems less likely. They could also just leave out her romantic story as they did in a way for Mulan. So we’ll get an Ariel who’ll play some role but we won’t see her happy ending played out or hinted at as having happened.
