Hmmm… I thought Ariel was pretty much a sure thing.
She’s a safe bet. They wouldn’t have been dropping anvils about mermaids and magical squids if they weren’t planning to do Ariel some time soon. I wouldn’t expect them to give out any details about her yet though, especially if the tumblr post that started this thread is actually legit and ABC specifically asked for the apparent Ariel casting call to be taken down from public view. If that really did happen, it means they’re trying to keep Ariel info under wraps, which would explain why K&H were being coy in answering that question.

Also, I wouldn’t expect to see Ariel until after MAP are dealt with. Too many toys outside the box.
And it’s safe to assume that MAP will be dealt with in the first part of the season, if only because the actresses will become unavailable later.
Ariel’s timing will ultimately depend on how she relates to other people’s storylines. If she’s involved with Regina’s (her mermaid problem) or Rumple’s (the squid ink connection) then we may see her earlier if they’re gonna be focusing on the adventures of Charmingstiltskins&Co in NL at the start of the season, and giving them character centric eps. I could see them introducing Ariel as a bit part player in a Regina or Rumple story, just as a teaser, but they hold off on the actual Little Mermaid story until the 2nd half of the season.

I agree. I expect we’ll deal with MAP and GOAT in the first 6 episodes which will open the door for a new character!

Agreed! Technically they wouldn’t even need an actress for that role, it *could* be CGI-ed.

However, it’s a very really possibility because in the original, the mermaid and the prince don’t end up together; she saves him from drowning but he thinks another girl did it and falls in love with her and the mermaid does because the deal sheave with the sea hag was that if she didn’t get him to fall in love with her, she would die. So I could see K & H using her to save someone she loved from afar: Peter Pan, possibly, since it sounds like in Neverland both he and the mermaids aren’t very nice, or Hook, or maybe even Phillip from the Wraith.
Or K&H could wait and make her story awesome and Ariel a major character.
Also I predict that Ursula won’t be a new character, but either Regina “mermaid trouble” line) or Rumple (“squid ink” line and penchant for making deals).
May 18, 2013 at 7:01 pm #195316RumplesGirlKeymasterI doubt she’ll be a one off because she is the most requested fairy tale character and H and K know that. I think she’ll turn up around episode 7 and be around more in the second half.

The Disney version is a fave of many people. And a small but passionate chunk of the fandom already ships her with Hook, though she doesn’t even exist yet. I’m pretty sure K&H are aware of what a valuable character she has the potential to be, so I’ll be very surprised if she ends up being a oneshot appearance. If that’s all they had in mind for her, they probably would have slotted her into an ep already, instead of holding out on us.
May 20, 2013 at 4:55 am #195490HappyEndingsSpectatorEddy Kitsis says that Ariel is one of their favorite characters and they have ideas for her but they are unsure as to whether or not they will introduce her because they want to get it right. They want to make sure that they can bring her story line justice if they bring her in. They don’t feel that they completely did so with Ruby who turned out to be the wolf in season one but then lost her story in season two.
Adam Horowitz, the other creator of the show warns that if they do bring Ariel in, she won’t be the fun fairytale character that everyone knows from Disney. They will put the “Once Upon a Time” spin on her so that they can tell their own version of the story. Hopefully, Ariel won’t become a villain or have some really twisted story that makes her completely unrecognizable
The rest of the story

May 20, 2013 at 12:32 pm #195497RumplesGirlKeymasterA few things:
1) Never expected her to be the fun fairytale character as the original story is DARK DARK DARK. I want a mix of the two.2) I don’t think them calling her a fairytale character is evidence that she’s in FTL. Alice and Wonderland, Peter Pan, the Little Mermaid they are all just “fantasy” stories. It’s just that both Alice and Peter have their own lands in their stories so we expect that those lands already exist. Since Ariel doesn’t have a fantasy land associated with her story, she can be anywhere.

I love hearing that their Ariel wouldn’t be the sweet girl from the Disney version. Give her a happy ending, by all means, but I’d love it if they incorporated darker elements from the Anderson version, compounded by their darker version of NL (assuming that’s where she’ll be). I want a complex Ariel!
And calling her a “fairytale character” is just generic wording, because she’s a character from a fairytale type story. It doesn’t dictate which world she’d be in.
