I’m honestly confused about what Arthur’s arc is at this point. For this half-season’s villain, Arthur seems oddly “reactive” rather than “proactive.” What’s his endgame, other than re-forge the sword? At this point, that doesn’t seem like a solution to whatever discontents he seems to be experiencing.

If I were to venture a guess, based on Merlin’s statement about Arthur wanting “glory” and on Arthur’s own statement that he wants to be known as the “Greatest Hero That Ever Lived”™I think he’ll want to battle and overcome the Dark One (i.e. Emma). Thoughts?

I think Arthur’s motives are (at least 3-fold):

    (1) He’s concerned he’ll be discovered to be a fraud
    (2) He’s hungry for power and glory after he feels he was denied both by only having half a blade.
    (3) He wants revenge on Merlin, whom Arthur feels made a fool of him with his “false prophesies.”

I think most of all, Arthur wants to kill Merlin with Excalibur.

Arthur is of the opinion that once he reforges Excalibur, everything will “fall into place.” So once he has his sword, his life will be magically fixed. I’m not so sure he has an endgame so much as one myopic goal that he thinks will fix all the things that are wrong in his life/world.
