There’s been tons of evidence that August is really a writer — besides the typewriter in that box on the back of his motorcycle. I’ve been picking up on many of those signals of August as a writer, perhaps because I’m also a writer. Maybe this is a “takes one to know one” deal or maybe not. Here’s my start on the proof that August is really a writer.

Writers depend on inspiration for something to say and ways to say it. August mentioned coming to SB for inspiration. He thought he might get inspiration from taking Emma for a drink. He helped Emma deal with her loss of inspiration in getting Mary Margaret proven innocent.

When writers are inspired, it feels like tapping a wellspring of ideas, images and feelings. Drinking from a water well fed by an underground lake is a perfect symbol for a writer getting inspired.

Writers know the value in creating suspense in the minds of their readers/viewers/listeners. August demonstrated his skill set for creating suspense when he was slow to reveal his name and his purpose in being in SB. His big preamble to opening the box and revealing his typewriter as an awesome characterization of how writers think about being mysterious.

Writers cannot work when they have time or when they try to make it happen. We have to trust the process and timing that we do not control. Learning to trust the writing process is similar to the challenges Emma and Henry are going through to trust August. Every time August mentions “taking a leap of faith”, he’s sharing a facet of working as a writer.

Writers know that their audiences are looking in a mirror as they read watch or listen to writing. They rarely wonder if they are “the fairest of them all” like EQ/Regina. They do wonder if they might feel better understood or shown a choice in their own lives that had been hidden from view. August has already been a mirror in conversations for Henry and Emma to look at themselves and to see themselves better.

Writers know it’s tricky to get others to “hop onboard” where they are taking them. A piece of writing takes others for a ride where they are not in control of the steering or the speed. The occasions where August has taken Emma on his bike to the water well and later to Regina’s garage — seem to me like a metaphor for how writers relate to their audiences. The writers of OUAT certainly have succeeded at getting a large fan community to hop on board “their bike” as well.

He may be a writer, but the EP's said in an interview that August is Not the writer of the book – we'll find out about that person in S2 🙂

I haven’t been expecting him to be the author of Henry’s precious volume of “Once Upon a Time”, so I won’t be disappointed if that comes to light. As a lover of the writing process, he appears to also treasure books like I do. The care he took in reassembling Henry’s book was an indication of how precious he finds books to be. I’ve been expecting him to author something new, given he’s seeking inspiration from his current time in SB.
