In his final scene, Weaver gave his famous “dearie” indicating that perhaps he was Rumple once more. What woke him up? Will he stay awake? How will this change things in Hyperion Heights?

yep he is definitely awake now. I think maybe the cup breaking woke him up, I think he probably started feeling something when he saw the cup and then when it broke that was what woke him up. That poor cup has been through heck and back. I guess now we get to try and figure out who the guardian who can free the darkness is? Was this supposed to be something like Merlin’s prophesy about wielding darkness for light?

Poor chip smashed again. Why must they always pick on chip!

a magical person maguffin so that Rumple has to stay the dark one and can become a shady villain when they need him

So true.
It’s so frustrating that they never found the way to write Rumple really well past season three. To me there is nothing wrong with him being The Dark One and still being married to Belle. She fell in love with him when he was already cursed and she should have been there for him, not co-signing his bad actions, but softening him somehow just by being there to remind him that there is a good man underneath the monster and that he can fight the darkness instead of always giving in. Yes he could still do shady things for plot reasons, but instead of yelling/leaving/coming back to him, Belle could be there consistently to pull him back from the evil brink. The on again off again stuff they did instead was exhausting.
Plus if they’d done this we never would’ve had those Evil Queen scenes in season six because Belle would’ve been right there to drop a bookcase on EQ if she tried any of that in front of her.

In light of that scene’s similarity to one from Ghostbusters, Rumpel’s waking expression takes on new meaning.

yes, this.
And I think he will try to help the others wake up, too.
Also: what’s a guardian? who’s a guardian?
The guardian could be Alice. The switch in scenes from Belle mentioning the guardian to Alice jumping out of the portal and almost knocking Rumple over could be a hint. It took a while to find each other because Rumbelle were on the edge of Realms (a Realm on the edge of Realms???) along with this new Cinderella, Henry etc, and Alice had to have a reason and the ability to get there. I don’t think she is Rumple’s guardian, but perhaps the guardian of the universes/realms/the natural order of things, a job that might pass from one person to the next, like the Author.
Keeper of Regina's bravery
October 28, 2017 at 8:52 am #343849PheeParticipantI’d like to think it was hearing his name, just for the sake of consistency with him remembering in the original Curse when he heard Emma’s name. Things happened pretty fast after she said his name, so it’s hard to say exactly what it was that triggered his memories.

I’m with you on the magical person maguffin, and did roll my eyes because here we go again with another mythic sounding title for someone/thing that sounds so important they really should have been mentioned way before now if the writers weren’t just pulling something random out of their…hats.
But I think the actual purpose of it is so they can actually lay the Dark One to rest by the end of the season. The power won’t be passed on to a new Dark One, so they can really, properly close the book on Rumple. He can find a way to die, and also rid the world of the tyranny of there being a Dark One as well, thus having him achieve something heroic. The Dagger will still exist, so darkness will still exist, but as long as the Guardian has it, it can’t ever be used again.
That way, if the show ends, that myth of the Dark One gets resolved with a nice, neat bow on it. And if by some chance they end up with a season 8, they can have the new big bad steal the Dagger from the Guardian and try to use it.
As for who it is, I dunno, but surely Rumple sending Alice after Henry to stop him from changing the course of a particular story must have something to do with it.
