I know that people think he is great, but i don’t. I think that he overacts. I mean it works as Rumpel, but it doesn’t work when he is trying to get emotional. It always comes off as over the top to me. I never really buy any of it. That is one of the reasons i think Desperate Souls is such a bad episode. That and the plot is wonky. It makes it difficult to read what was actually going on in the episode. I think we have to wait and see.
I think good acting is you watch a character and their body language conveys what they are trying to convey in the scene through dialogue, like you can read them like you read people in the real world, and i think that at times Robert is so over the top that that is difficult to do that with his character. It doesn’t feel real or consistent to me and i have always felt this way about the character even before i got annoyed with his fandom. I don’t mind the character so much as a character.
Honestly we just need more information.

You are not supposed to know what he is trying to convey exactly. It’s intentional. Mystery and certain ambiguity- these are his trademarks.

He can do his creepy little smiles and hand flourishes. But then when he is trying to be quiet and still and emotional and true to his feelings i don’t think it works. It always seems off to me. And i thought that well before i got annoyed with the fandom’s reaction to the character. Like when Desperate Souls came out before this forum existed i think most people generally considered that a terrible episode because while it was interesting to get some of Rumpel’s back story the episode just didn’t feel true, but then after Skin Deep when people started to like Rumpel more then everyone liked Desperate Souls which, in my opinion, is still the worst episode of the series.
Though honestly he has gotten much better. He was great in the scene when Bae got sucked through the vortex and he was great when he was talking to Charming about the love he lost. Though i don’t think that the Rumpel/Belle reunion when she remembered was all that great, but that was more Belle’s reaction then the acting.

For me he is exceptional as an over the top Rumple and convincing while conveying emotions. Way better than the rest of the cast. Besides I’ve seen RC in many other productions and I respect him as an actor too much to even consider passing judgements on his acting skills the way you do.
I’m sorry you got annoyed with the people here because they don’t like the same things as you. Think how boring this world would be if everyone had the same opinion. The discussions in this forum are possible because people have different opinions. I think they have every right to like Rumple and his episodes just like you have the right to express your love for Emma and her episodes. There is no reason to get annoyed by it. It’s a natural thing.May 27, 2012 at 8:36 pm #147871antbeeParticipant@mickey wrote:
If the actor, as you put it here, is not deep with emotions, then who is.
I’ve always thought that when Rumple told Bae his mother was dead he was lying. He just didn’t want the boy to investigate any further or start looking for her, and by saying so he stopped this conversation. That’s how I interpreted the scene, but I guess we have to wait for writers’ explanation. I don’t think anything so far suggests he killed her though.Yes, I guess this could belong in this thread or the thread about Rumplestiltskin’s wife, but I don’t think he killed her either because pre-Dark Curse Rumple would not have done something like that.
My theory is that they probably liked each other but didn’t love each other and they may not have many prospects other than each other. So they got married hoping for the best, and everything seems fine for awhile until Rumple is drafted, and everything falls apart for them. Then, I think she just ran away, committed suicide, or a combination of the two. Maybe she had too much pride to be married to Rumple after he was labeled a coward. Or maybe something happened to her while he was away that made her ashamed and she ran away because of that. Or maybe she felt trapped being married to Rumple when she realized that their marriage wasn’t what she thought it was going to be like especially if having a baby made her feel even more trapped.
I don’t think Rumple wanted Bae to know that Bae’s mom ran away and/or committed suicide which is why he didn’t come right out and say what happened especially if he feels guilty that the reason she ran away and/or died was because of him in some way.

One of the most emotionally powerful moments in the series, to me, is the moment in “Skin Deep” right after Belle walks out. Rumple is standing alone in the dungeon, the camera moves in and RC makes two tiny gestures: a muscle in his cheek twitches twice, and then he slowly closes his eyes. The eloquence of this moment is stunning. The range of his performance, from the cabinet-smashing to this moment, amazes me. As a film history major, I studied hundreds of films, and more often than not I’ve felt that acting lost a poignant subtlety when sound was introduced to film, but it’s performances like this that change my mind.
I would encourage anyone who enjoyed this moment to see Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing and Charm School, where RC plays a character on the opposite end of the spectrum from Rumple.
And by the way, I think over-the-top is exactly how Rumple should be played. It’s part of his Dark One act, scares people a bit, throws them off-kilter; it gives Rumple an advantage in his deal-making and keeps people at a distance. Watch how he is with Snow: much quieter, more genuine. It makes him vulnerable, but he trusts her not to take advantage of that, and he comes to trust Charming in the same way. He vowed he would love no one else until he found Bae, but Snow and Charming are winning him over.
May 28, 2012 at 7:28 am #147920hjbauParticipantI am not at all annoyed with the people in this forum because they disagree with me. I guess you made that up in your head. I just want a good discussion and this has become a personal attack because i disagree with you. Thanks for your thoughts.
May 28, 2012 at 7:58 am #147929a_desperate_soulParticipantSorry you feel attacked, hjbau. 🙁 I respect your opinions and actually like you very much. We’re all friends here. All that matters is that we all love OUAT. 😀
May 28, 2012 at 9:49 am #147939mickeyParticipantYou’re welcome.
Luckily everyone can read what you’ve written about this fandom and make judgments about how it sounds for themselves.
The term “personal attack” is overused in my opinion. A personal attack is in fact when someone makes insulting or abusive comments about the other person to invalidate what they are saying. I haven’t seen any of this done on this forum. I don’t consider refering to what other people said to make my opinion or express my feelings about it a personal attack. As long as it is done in a civilised manner of course. -
