Although Baelfire, Rumple’s son, has only appeared once so far in FTL (episode 8), many have speculated about his identity. So far, we only know a few things about him.
1) The duke’s guard speculated that the boy was brave, unlike his cowardly father. Therefore, he called the boy a “bastard” who wasn’t Rumple’s true son.
2) Nevertheless, the boy was the only family Rumple had left, and he loved his son.
3) Baelfire was a boy of 14 last time he was seen. His father, wanting to save his son from war, transformed into the Dark One, which frightened Baelfire.
4) In episode 12, Belle inquired what happened to the boy whose clothes she’d found. Rumple replied that he lost his son the same way he lost his wife (the implication being that his boy ran away). Some people have been wondering if the mysterious stranger, August W. Booth is grown-up Baelfire, who somehow escaped the curse. Some say the reason Rumple hates fairies is because they took away his son to Never Land. Some have speculated that Baelfire became a Lost Boy, and others say Baelfire really is Peter Pan. Time will tell whether these theories prove true.
The etymology of Baelfire’s name and the meaning connected to that name are interesting to consider. I have read elsewhere that bael-fire is a Celtic pagan term meaning “bonfire” and is connected to the pagan celebration of Beltane, spring’s arrival festival. Traditionally in Ireland, a bael-fire was lit and its embers lasted until morning to welcome the coming dawn of spring. In Scotland, the bael-fire was connected to a purification ritual. Also, the term bael-fire was used to refer to a beacon atop a hill lit at night. Finally, it is a dated term that referred to a fire-pyre used in funeral services.
I’m not sure yet how bael-fire is connected to the character Baelfire, but it’s one possible connection. Baelfire, being a pagan rooted word, could be the good counter-part to the dark one, Zoso, which is another pagan/cult notion. I’m not sure yet, but it’s interesting to ponder.

That’s an interesting name connection I had never read before and your theory that Baelfire is the counter light to the dark one — that is an amazing thought. 😀

I was watching Ep 2 and Maleficent said something like even this curse will not bring back what you love, so i don’t think the curse can do that. I don’t think it can bring someone back from the dead. It is possible that Bae is not dead though.
April 2, 2012 at 2:50 am #140579SnickerdoodleParticipantI am of the opinion at this point that Baelfire may be Regina’s brother, taken by Rumpel from Cora in exchange for some deal. Which means he would be Cora’s actual son, Regina’s brother, and Rumpel’s adopted son.
Of course, I’m not sure what the meaning of all the deals she has gone through on behalf of Regina actually means yet. But knowing that she (Cora) is the miller’s daughter just led my thoughts down that path.
If August ends up being Bae, that will indeed be an interesting twist, but it might explain why Regina finds him familiar.

If what the knight implied is true and he is not Rumple’s real son, it is not because Rumple dealt for him, but some other circumstance. I thought he was suggesting that Mrs. R hcan even unfaithful and gotten pregnant by some other man.

Okay, I have an awesome theory. You know the Evil Queen told Rumple that Belle “died?” What if the fairies helped Baelfire escaped and came back to Rumple, telling him that he had died when in reality, he was still alive but somewhere safe and far away from his father. Maybe the fairies sent him to our world perhaps, and became our beloved Stranger?

But I think it is possible that Rumple might be able to bring someone back from the dead now that he has Love Potion #9. He made a big deal about how if you can bottle love you can do anything. But I am also not convinced that Bae is dead so I don’t know if it matters anyway.
April 3, 2012 at 11:35 am #140774hjbauParticipantRumpel doesn’t have a love potion. He has a bottle of love. And the way they showed Rumpel putting it together right after Gold said “You are more powerful then you think” to Emma made me think that bottle of love has to do with Emma. And i still think think it is an ingredient in the curse and that is why Emma is the savior and the breaker of the curse. I don’t think it has to do with Bae.
If Bae is dead then i think he needs to be dead for good. I still think that there is a possibility that Rumpel killed him, but he blames the fairies.
April 3, 2012 at 11:48 am #140777killianhookfanParticipantI know. I just call it Love Potion #9 because of the space on the shelf. And I agree that I think it has to do with the curse and is the reason that Emma is the savior. But I also think that it may give Rumple the ability to bring back the dead – only because he has made a big deal about not being able to bring back the dead but has also said that if you can bottle love you can do ANYTHING. And since uncalled for deaths seem to be a bit of a problem on this show, and a cause of evilness and vengence, I think it would be interesting if it gave him the ability to bring back the dead. Who knows – maybe Kathryn is our first example of someone who has been brought back from the dead.
