There were some new songs woven throughout which made it a lovely musical. Emma did a great job as Belle and really gave her a believable performance, especially as a more mordern woman ahead of her time who believes in teaching women to read and being a bit of an inventor. And Dan Stevens totally brought an amazing quality to the Beast, especially with his voice performance. Luke Evans as Gaston was hilarious! There was a scene when he sings to himself in the mirror. The rest of the supporting cast did a great job, too.
Did anyone else watch it yet? What did you think of Emma Watson as Belle? What did you think of Dan Stevens as the Beast? What about the rest of the cast?

March 26, 2017 at 10:07 am #334965RumplesGirlKeymasterI saw it last weekend and absolutely adored it. I thought it was near perfect.
Dan and Emma both did great jobs, though I thought Dan really did some good work portraying the Beast and I *adore* his solo toward the end. All the actors were pretty much great though I had a slight negative reaction to Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts (love her generally, just not here).
ETA: other things I adored
–The costumes (I’ve been dreaming of that powder blue outfit at the end)
–the CGI
–that they incorporated elements of the French fairy tale
–that they answered some of the questions from the animated film that have never quite made sense (like how Belle got the Beast on her horse after the wolf attack
–some meaty backstory for the Beast and his servants

Oh, yes! I’ve been listening to Evermore all morning. Dan Stevens totally nailed the Beast. No one else will ever come close for me.

March 26, 2017 at 3:25 pm #334977WickedRegalParticipantI have no idea where to start on the brilliance that was this movie!
Ummm…first, all around perfect casting! The only thing I would’ve liked to change is…I would’ve preferred Audra McDonald to play Mrs. Potts! Emma Thompson did good, but I just really feel like Audra would’ve just done it justice! Can you imagine her singing Beauty and the Beast during the waltz sequence….ooooh, that’s what I wanted!
Dan Stevens and Emma Watson did a remarkable job, loved them! Emma was a much better Belle than I originally anticipated, and Dan was really good as the Beast, though a part of me wishes they had let him sing his songs in his human voice rather than the Beast’s. But that Beast voice was perfect, so he was still great all around!
The Scenery and CGI was amazing!
Luke Evans and Josh Gad as Gaston & LeFou were as hilarious and enjoyable as I thought they’d be! Can they do another movie together?
Ewan McGregor as Lumiere…loved it! And “Be Our Guest” was almost as enchanting as the cartoon version!
Overall, the movie is definetly one of my favorite live action adaptions!

I actually liked the Beast base voice. I found it deep and soulful. But like you, another fan wondered what Dan Stevens would sound singing like without the Beast filter. You can listen to the result here. It’s still lovely. He’s a very good singer in his natural voice.

(Also, general *sigh* Dan Stevens)

I would’ve preferred Audra McDonald to play Mrs. Potts!
Felt the same way. Emma Thompson was also great as Mrs. Potts though.

I feel like what it did to the original film is exactly what GoT did to ASOIAF.
They changed the characters completely, used the same plot points out of context and added their own crap.
Belle was not empathic towards others, she was pretty much condescending, she wasn’t nice at all and thought she was better than everyone, “small minded people”. I was actually surprised that she helped the Beast go back to his castle after he saved her life, that was OOC, but at least she didn’t thank him afterwards so consistency there. In addition, they had to “empower” her, meaning she cannot show any signs of vulnerability, she cannot cry after her freedom and father are gone, no she’ll hit poor lumiere and immediately try to escape. I wasn’t impressed with her acting and singing as well.
Gaston was less sinister and while I don’t think that the original Gaston was intelligent, he wasn’t a complete idiot. I don’t get why they dropped his plan to put Belle’s father in an asylum in order to extort Belle, instead everything horrible he does, he does it out of a whim or because he’s hot tempered, not because he is malicious.
The Beast – there is a reason why the animated did the prologue the way they did because you can’t show the beast being a terrible douche if you want your audience to feel any sympathy towards him, that’s why the original only gave us “there was no love in his heart”, simple, you don’t actually know what kind of a person he really was and it is best to let the audience figure it themselves.. you could have seen that he had good in him with the way his servants respected him and actually cared about him.
More things that bothered me:
– Telling Belle about the curse was ridiculous, you would think that a good person would try to figure out a way to help them even if they didn’t want any help, but not this Belle.– Irrelevant backstory for the main characters, it didn’t serve anything, it didn’t add anything, there wasn’t some twist to it so I can’t understand why Maurice couldn’t tell Belle her mother died from illness, just something that ruined the pace of the film.
– Adding a mcguffin for one scene, which was never mentioned before and never mentioned again, I’m talking about that stupid book, this like something straight out of OUAT. why didn’t Belle use this book to get to her father sooner?
– Belle didn’t break the curse. She said “I love you” after the last petal fell, what did break the curse was the Enchantress, so what was the point?
– Speaking of the Enchantress, why didn’t she curse Gaston after she saw what he did and how he behaved?
– Nitpick: why isn’t Belle the only one that wears blue during the song “Belle”?
