Don’t forget the side benefit, RG, to Ariel being there too for our “little ship that could” (or should). 😛

I noticed that too, RG! Love it! Rumbelle is so heartbreakingly beautiful, and this week’s scenes with vision Belle and Rumple battling his own moral conscience got to me! *Rumple crying gets me every time *
Here’re the scenes from 3×4 I think you were mentioning:

(ball of sadness)
I think it’s really interesting that the second the binding spell breaks two things happen:
1) Belle appears–his moral center and manifestation of what he wants to believe (that there is something behind the mask of the monster)
2) he pulls out the doll–a physical reminder of cowardice and pain and suffering.
And at the end of the scene the only thing he has left is the doll.
This episode. With the Dearie feels.

"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 24, 2013 at 11:05 am #218467KebParticipantGoing off the idea of people leaving Rumple, or him driving them away (which is the worst bit for him)…
Belle’s left him a number of times. She left when he let her go, but came back. She left when he told her to Go and broke everyone’s hearts, and while she tried to come back it took her 30 years cuz Regina. And then she left AGAIN when he lied to her (my theory for why the kiss in Broken didn’t work, cuz he was scheming to get around his promise the very moment he made it–not a TL thing to do), but came back and for once wouldn’t leave when he told her to. But she DID leave when he wasn’t honest with her in 204, twice, and only came back–this time on her terms and more slowly–when he did tell her the truth, oh, and gave her a library. (mm library)
And then she didn’t mean to leave him (any more than Bae did when he fell through the portal) but she DID leave him in 211 cuz she lost her memory…and in 212 she was desperate to get away from him. She was starting to come back when boom Regina makes her Lacey, and leaves him hanging…twice. She only came back because he gave up being good.
And when she did eventually come back, as herself, it was just another reminder of his failure to be good (or bad) enough for her–he hadn’t won her love back as Lacey; he had to rely on the sneaky fairy. And then HE had to do the leaving, because the redemption he’d always sought, winning Bae back, had been snatched away from him forever and the only chance he saw left was saving Henry.
And now even her visions leaves him. A lot. She comes back…she always comes back, thank goodness, but she’s left Rumple way more times than anyone else. No wonder he has trouble trusting that THIS time she’ll still come back each time.

October 24, 2013 at 11:17 am #218468RumplesGirlKeymasterYou know it’s interesting (and I hadn’t put this together) but when he dismisses her in the final scene of 304, he doesn’t say “and don’t ever come back” it’s “I don’t want to talk right now.” Meaning, I’ll want to talk later but right now I’m full of self loathing and self hatred and I need to wallow in my self loathing and self hatred. He’s not fully dismissing her. Step in the right direction, Mr. Imp
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 24, 2013 at 11:27 am #218471KebParticipantThat’s true. And we’ve known at least since Broken that he doesn’t feel worthy of Belle…every time she leaves, he pretty much puts that out there. (I’m quoting from memory so I might be off in the wording slightly.)
–201: “And now you must go, because despite what you hope, I’m still a monster.”
–204: “I’m a coward…” (the first time he confesses this openly to her)
–211: “After everything I’ve done, why haven’t you left me?”
And in 304 he lays it out there: She sees the real him, so when she gets over her delusions that he can be good, she’ll be gone. She knows he’s a coward, she knows he’s done horrible things, she knows he’s lived a life of craven self-interest. She knows what he became when she wasn’t inspiring him to be on his best behavior. He wasn’t good enough for Milah or Cora–how could he be good enough for Belle?
Okay, pausing to mentally cuddle Rumple better now. Sorry. Feels.

October 24, 2013 at 11:35 am #218473RumplesGirlKeymasterHe wasn’t good enough for Milah or Cora–how could he be good enough for Belle? Okay, pausing to mentally cuddle Rumple better now. Sorry. Feels.
This first part especially. Milah turned out to be an adulteress and abandoned her son. Cora turned out to be kinda slightly evil and ripped out hearts. And Rumple sees himself in both of these women. He abandoned his son. He’s the Dark One and prone to doing evil and ripping hearts. And yet both these women, despite them being alike, still left him, their love not being strong enough to stay for him. And then there’s Belle who is decidedly not evil but heroic and pure and good. And he takes one look at her and all “I’m sorry. Why are you here again?” I always go back to what he said in the Miller’s Daughter: “you’re a beautiful woman who loved an ugly man.” He’s not talking physical beauty here but something much deeper;
I’ve said this before but Rumple will never stop being surprised that Belle fell in love with him. It literally does not compute in his head.
God I love this man.

Here is a great Tumblr article someone found, and it’s a perfect explanation for what happened in 304.
