Honestly? I’m never going to stop weeping; my heart breaks into a million pieces at his last goodbyes, knowing he’s saying goodbye. What kills me is that he thought he had a future; he had JUST told Belle that the only path he wanted was the one where they are together and now the only path he can take is the one where they can never be together.
Think about how suddenly this all happened. Just two days ago, he thought Pan was trapped forever and he had a happy future with Belle and Bae. Then Pan did the old switcharoo, and really there wasn’t that much time between then and the sacrifice. So in essence, Gold still thought he had a future up until maybe half hour or so before his last scene. Then, he had to make the ultimate decision. My baby had such little time to process the fact of his own death……it’s heartbreaking. Everything happened so quickly – even the goodbyes.
It’s very telling, sigh, that Gold told Bae that he accepted the fact that Bae would find happiness without him. As a father, I think he was able to do this because parents have to let go if their adult children all the time. Of course he’s pained that he won’t get to know his son again, but Gold knows that Bae will be happy and that’s all that matters.
With Belle, not only can’t Gold promise her happiness (she’s losing her happy ending, HIM), but he is, in fact, dying with immense regret and pain. I don’t believe he came to terms with the fact that he and Belle would never have a life together, that they were denied a future, a family. That is to say, he accepted it because that was the consequence of his decision, but there is no solace for him at all as there is with Bae….except perhaps that Belle would be spared to live a full life and that they did at least know the most extraordinary love. I loved how he told her she made him stronger, basically saying that he was able to make this sacrifice because of her. She’s hero, as he said in the phone call scene – she’s always been his hero.
I still can’t get over that moment when Gold is frozen in place, like Belle, and he gazes at her with the look of the most incredible love. He’s trying to memorize her, imprint her in his heart so that she will always be with him, even in death. It’s incredibly touching and speaks to their great love that Belle is the one he needs most to look at in his final moments, sob.
Belle is staring at Gold as well, completely helpless- and that is so tragic because she can’t say or do anything. Her eyes, though- they are so full of love- and that’s also something that Gold needs to take with him. She loved him, always did; he knows how magical and powerful their love is, he had faith in that love when he needed her to find Pandora’s Box. So, going to his death, he needs this last reminder of the lasting and epic love he and Belle shared.

with Belle he can’t accept that. Oh, Betsy reading your post made me weep… and yes, the episode right before this Gold was so happy that he COULD have a future with Belle only to realize in his final torturous moments (trying to get the cuff off-oh my heart) that it was an illusion. the look they share in the end is just so precious… oh… *running away to cry*[adrotate group="5"]December 24, 2013 at 10:08 pm #233654RumplesGirlKeymasterGold loves both of them VERY VERY deeply; one is not more important than the other and in the end he sacrificed his life for both of them
Completely agree. There was a really great Tumblr post after 304 (it’s buried somewhere in this thread) about how Bae is his happy ending but Belle is his happily ever after. For Rumple to be whole he needs both. Like he said in TMD, he’s “full of love” (god so freaking true). I don’t think you can ask a man to choose between the love of his life and his child. And like I said a page back, Belle wouldn’t have accepted Rumple’s “I decided to give up on Henry and come home to a life with you.” She would have frog-marched him straight back to NL. She was willing to go with him the first time to help. She knows that he did this to honor Baelfire. She wouldn’t let him take the easy path.
That’s one of the things I love about them: she doesn’t get all wobbie around him; she is capable of standing up for herself and putting him in his place. (ah “Lacey” forest scene…”you’re not as dark as you wnat people to believe”)

by the way, this and other such quotes led me to believe that Rumpel is really a hero not a villain and never was a villain. the problem is that he did some things like turning a man into a snail and killing Milah and turning Regina bad. maybe these actions could be excused by the fact that he saw the future and knew that these people were going to be a danger to his family one day… who knows) but somehow Belle saw that he really was a good man pretending to be a villain so that people should THINK he is dark and stay away from him. he was trying to maintain an image of The Dark One even his son believed him to be dark, but not Belle. she saw the truth right away.
*sigh*
I love Belle. I love Rumbelle.December 24, 2013 at 10:23 pm #233659betsypaige24Participantbetsypaige24 wrote: Gold loves both of them VERY VERY deeply; one is not more important than the other and in the end he sacrificed his life for both of them

Yes, I remember that post……it was brilliantly written and made me cry, lol. The thing is, it’s different with a child. Of course he loves and needs Bae, but Bae is an adult who has a life of his own apart from his papa (and this would have been the case even if the curse hadn’t torn them apart). I have always thought that Gold could have been ok had he known that his son didn’t hate him and was thriving somewhere. He has his own separate life to think about, though – that path he spoke about, with Belle and no doubt children. He’s a parent, but he’s also a human being who has emotional and physical needs that only Belle can fulfill; the look he gave her after his last words was one of tremendous need and longing, pain and regret, that they were never going to have the life they wanted. He yearned for her even in his last moments.
“I’m full of love” is my favorite quote of the series – it just speaks to who this man is. He needs to give love and receive it – that’s what he’s about. I think he could burn everything he owns, trash all those silly possessions, and be completely happy with Belle and Bae in his life. He’s such a warm, emotional person with the biggest heart of anyone
LOL Rumple always loved that about Belle in NL, lol, even if he didn’t show it; he told Bae once that he hated how everyone was afraid of him. I think he secretly adored her standing up to him, challenging him…….
Oh, and just to leave us on a cheery note…… when he says “I love you Belle, you made me stronger”………He’s already speaking of himself in the past tense

With the exception of PP, I don’t think there are villains on this show. The “villains” are deeply complicated and complex people who have decisions in the name of love, power, family, magic, happy endings, revenge, and fear. But they aren’t cut and dried villains. One of the many reasons I love this show so much.
but not Belle. she saw the truth right away.
One of my favorite moments from Lacey was when in the flashback, Rumple is talking about how everyone knows you don’t steal from the Dark One because they know the consequences and Belle sorta rolls her eyes and says, “no…they don’t” because she can see that under that hard exterior he doesn’t like hurting people. He is still very very very human.
God I love him.

I think we need to reexamine your definition of cheery…..
THIS is a cheery holiday note
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"December 25, 2013 at 12:25 am #233666betsypaige24ParticipantI was being so cruel with that comment, I know, lol; it just broke my heart, sigh…………and yes Snowy Rumbelle is Cheery Rumbelle, lol
I’m trying not to quote because I always have to edit out the HTML tags and it’s aggravating, so sorry!
RG, I loved that as scene as well and found it funny because Rumple tried so hard to find something scary to say…..it took him forever to come up with something (and I doubt Belle was intimidated by that anyway, lol)
Regina, is way different from Gold for me……I’d rather not get into her here, but I don’t view her at all like I do him. My baby has never really been a villain, not in the Pan or Cora sense. His essential self is incredibly kind, gentle, warm and loving. In SB S1, he wore a mask…..Belle’s presence melted that and from S2 onward, we’ve seen his real self emerge. Some of my favorite Gold moments are when he looks down, generally in response to someone making a pointed/hurtful comment at him; he’s so very vulnerable. He’s a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, whose emotions overwhelm his logic at times – I adore him for this, for so many things.
I’m watching the dock scene from the S2 finale, and can’t help thinking of Belle from the winter finale when Gold says “he’s gone- and I didn’t even hurt a chance to say goodbye”.

December 25, 2013 at 2:45 pm #233711Marty McFlyParticipant“…will explore their relationship in whatever state that is” hmmmm. this was said by the writers before we knew that Gold will die, when fans asked if we will finally see RumBelle in the same world. it sounds like there will be a lot of flashbacks not only to the EF time they had together, but also to the times they had in StoryBrooke together. there were months between the deal with the Ogres and taking Belle to the part where she is sent away and captured by Regina.
also the whole beginning of season 2 they could have had a lot of adventures together while David and Regina were trying to get Snow and Emma.
also, the one day they had together before Pan came out of the box only to be Henry in Pan’s body – and Rumbelle were unable to talk until right before death. in that one day so many things could have happened! Gold is finally able to think about a future with Belle, who knows how many barriers were broken in those few hours? now that he knew that he won’t leave her heartbroken, he probably gave her his whole heart and soul without worry. he probably took his mask off finally. oh, I’d love to see those few hours together!
that flashback in “going home” was there to show us why he was so reserved with her, why he refused to open up to her. all his life he knew that his ending shall not be a happy one. he knew that right after he finds his son, he will die. so he kept his distance from everybody, especially from people who might love him and then lose him. he was afraid of emotional entanglements for that reason. so imagine the openness and honesty of those last few hours with Belle! I’d love to hear some conversations there!
as Betsy said (I also don’t like to quote) he tried so hard to seem scary… he tried to keep his reputation as The Dark One – even though he usually asked for stupid things as the “price” for magic and was always there to help people in hopeless situations. he never ever tried to justify himself when he was told that he’s a baddie. when he was branded a coward, he called himself a coward without reserve, and when he was branded a villain as the DO he called himself a villain. ALL the other characters tried to justify themselves and didn’t understand why they aren’t loved by all. he (and snow) were the only ones who, when they did something wrong, even if it was totally justifiable, never tried to clear their conscience. gold (and snow) were very hard on themselves.Gold could have had a ton of excuses for everything (what comes to mind now is how he tells Bae in Manhattan “there’s no greater pain than regret” and Bae answers “try abandonment” if I were Gold I’d answer “I tried that already and regret is still worse” or something. (at that point we already knew about Milah and his father -only not about pan)
so no one knew that he was a good guy, not even his son. but Belle…. she always knew.
