I am sure this will be very unpopular here, but I don’t think that even Belle understood Rumpelstiltskin.
She certainly knew there was something there, under that sparkly skin and this “I/m a villain! I’m a coward! I’m a monster!” exterior, but I don’t think she realized that he really wasn’t any of that. at all.I mean, the first thing she tells him in SB after she remembered herself was “don’t give in to your hate” “hate?” he probably wanted to ask, “I don’t HATE Regina, I never have… I can’t say I’m not furious at her for locking you up, but hate is a strong word!”
and again when she talks about Hook she sais, “don’t let your hate for this man get in the way of that” He really doesn’t look like he hates Hook at all. even after almost killing him with dreamshade, all he did was ask him if he’s done trying to kill him. again, I’m sure he is very angry at him for stealing Milah from Bae, but he doesn’t seem to care that he flirts with Emma or that he sees all these unpleasant moments with no one trusting him especially his own son. he ignores Hook’s snide remark about the wardrobe change, and unlike Regina, he never said “I haven’t forgotten about that by the way” when talking about the elixir that can cure David. Maybe I’m blinded, but I really don’t see any hatred radiating toward Hook at all.

She understood him enough to see he wasn’t the monster he tried to make himself out to be.
She understood him enough to know that he was angry about what Regina did and would likely try and seek revenge.
Belle understands that Rumple has a temper that gets the better of him sometimes.
I would say Belle understands Rumple far more than Nealfire does.

THAT is an understatement. Nealfire never gave Rumpel a chance. I have a lot of bones to pick with him
the guy goes off to face a terrifying monsterous being in order to save HIS behind from death in the ogre wars (not to mention Moraine and all his other little friends) and all he could say to him is “you hurt people all the time”?? how about some love and understanding? I GET that he’s a kid and he wants his father back, and I get he’s just a kid, but why not try to help your poor father fight this curse?Help him go back, back to the best version of him.
I was stoked when Bae heard His father tell Belle that IT NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. no it never did happen before, because Bae never gave him a chance.
then the bean. I UNDERSTAND that he made a deal, but honestly! you see the man is terrified and is trying to pull you out of the portal, LET HIM!! why pull him in? why force him to go through the portal from hell, if you see he is scared??
the worst comes in Manhattan. this whole “get out of my apartment gig. seriously, your father finally found you and you won’t even TALK?? “you’ve got three minutes” and then he has the audacity to say “two minutes” like shut up, I don’t care what you have to say. Pinoccio/August didn’t time him, so look at the difference of how he talked to him.
even Emma had a little more compassion for him and she was very quick to blame him for killing Archie

maybe Rumpelstiltskin didn’t raise Baelfire very well. Maybe all of his abandonment issues played a role in how he treated Bae in FTL (spoiled him rotten most probably) so when HE became the weak one, when it was HIM who needed help and emotional support, the kid couldn’t provide it.
I mean look at Never-land. look at how Neal keeps goading him, save David because it’s the right thing to do -no favors,, gimme your dagger, gimme the Pandora box, and what did Rumpel do? give him whatever he asked for (unless the shadow took it. never reprimanded him for using the squid ink on him. (really cruel thing to do)
whatever you say about Regina, she did raise her kid well. he is the most well-adjusted, compassionate, supportive, mature child I’ve ever seen. and yes, HE helped Regina go back to the best version of herself. and he was also just a kid. a younger kid than Bae even.
(i’m afraid that Emma is doing the same thing now to henry – letting all HER abandonment issues cloud her child-raising judgement, and now Henry will be a troublemaker like drive a car or whatever, but that’s for another thread)

HOW RUMBELLE BEAT THE ODDS
In responding to another post, I found myself thinking about Rumbelle and how a million things had to go right in order for their story to make it on ONCE. Skin Deep was supposed to be a one-off; Belle was never supposed to be a part of Rumple’s storyline – unless way at the end (they kept her alive for a reason) IF at all. Even though the Beauty and the Beast get together in the stories/movie, ONCE was not going to keep them together, ONCE was not going to tell their story. They would have told Gold/Beast’s story, but not the B&B story (which makes me wonder why they decided to write Skin Deep and make him the Beast when it was going to be a one off). If Bobby and Emilie hadn’t had such incredible chemistry, if they only had decent or good chemistry, would we ever have seen Rumbelle again? If, then, had Emilie’s pilot been picked up, would we have seen them again? Of course, when Jane and A/E were writing/editing the script, the story did change, so clearly it was really True Love – and we saw that Rumple wanted Belle back as soon as he let her go. Point is, there was a very good chance that we never would have seen them together and hence if they had ended up together anyway, would it have truly been a Beauty and the Beast storyline without us having seen how Belle changed him/transformed his life? Not really..Gold would presumably have changed in some way without her..which would make their story rather, well, uninteresting It would have really been just an ordinary romance, a FT in name onlyPOM, I completely agree…..
Belle knows Rumple, always has. She saw inside his heart almost from the very beginning. I don’t get it – Belle has consistently tried to show him that he’s not a monster, that he IS good, that he has that in him. She knows him so well, knows how full of love he is, loves him for everything that he is. If she met him pre-curse, she’d have fallen in love as deeply as she did with Imp Rumple…….
I strong, strongly disagree about Rumple being a bad father; he was a wonderful, adoring father….and mother, frankly. I won’t go into Regina/Henry, but I don’t agree with that either.
Papa and Son love each other deeply, but they don’t obviously know each other…….and as Bobby has said so many times, Belle is Gold’s emotional center, his rock. If she were to die, he’d be hopeless and despairing – to say the least; Neal couldn’t help him through it, no one could.
