Keeper of FelixJune 26, 2014 at 1:35 pm #275347Marty McFlyParticipantBut I doubt he is suicidal or trying to bring Neal back. First, Neal died a hero, and I don’t think Rumple wants to take that away from him.
He. Did. Not. Die. A. Hero.
It pisses me off when people say that. What makes ANYBODY think that he died a hero? A&E said it in an INTERVEIW?? Ok fine, whatever. “He died a hero.” I’ll file that along with “it’s all about hope” and “watching his father sacrifice his life had a profound effect on Neal” under “things we are told about OUAT but are never shown”
If you want information supported by the story you are shown, ANYONE can see that Neal died a desperate pathetic man. Relying on his dark father to save him again after Emma separates him. He and Emma both looked to their powerful dark one for hope that he can find yet another loophole. He probably could have absorbed him again if he wasn’t controlled.
There was nothing heroic about his death. He saved no one. No one needed him to die. Emma and Henry were perfectly safe. They were perfectly happy. Henry was not alone and thinking he was abandoned the way Rumple knew Bae was. There was no reason at all to go find Henry. There was no reason to bring back the dead, using dark magic, (KNOWING his heroic father will be reduced to being a slave to darkness), and certainly not in such haste. And it’s not as if they don’t know how to write a true hero.
It did nothing to move the story forward either.June 27, 2014 at 6:23 am #275436PriceofMagicParticipantBut I doubt he is suicidal or trying to bring Neal back. First, Neal died a hero, and I don’t think Rumple wants to take that away from him.

He wanted to find Emma and Henry even though they were safe and happy without him. He wanted to bring back Rumple to get him there even though it meant Rumple would become a slave to the WW. It’s similar to when Neal used Roland as bait to get to Neverland. However Neal didn’t actually die in the EF. He was dying but Rumple absorbed him to save him.
Neal’s true death was in Storybrooke. He sacrificed himself so Rumple could tell Emma and Charming that Zelena was the WW (though Zelena couldn’t have dressed more witchy if she’d tried so it was pretty obvious.) Neal then stopped Rumple from trying to save him even though it meant he never got to see Henry again. Neal accepted that he’d made his bed, now he had to lie in it.

Keeper of FelixJune 27, 2014 at 6:29 am #275437seamstressParticipantI was watching the situation from the characters’ POV.
Imo Neal’s death was the stupidest and most unnecessary thing ever, and I doubt I’ll ever be able to forgive the writers for it. But I’m trying to move on and focus on the remaining good stuff aka Rumbelle. 🙂

I don’t think wanting your family is a bad thing. I mean…hello Snow and Charming and deciding to curse an entire realm without thinking about their peasants or anything other than themselves (after they told Neal it was pointless and that they could never leave the EF…no let’s just wait until right after he’s dead).
He sacrificed himself so Rumple could tell Emma and Charming that Zelena was the WW (though Zelena couldn’t have dressed more witchy if she’d tried so it was pretty obvious.
Rumple also had several moments of lucidity where he could have told them. I mean…look at how they found Glinda.

Do I even need to say that I agree?
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"June 27, 2014 at 9:47 am #275449obisgirlParticipantI think what made Neal selfish is that he sacrificed his father’s safety in order to get back to Emma and Henry. This was the point that made me the most upset after I watched the episode. He took it for granted that his father would find a way to make himself free (when we saw that was impossible for several episodes until Zelena was defeated). And then I realized, remembering Roland gate, that Neal behaved like this before, taking the easy, putting someone else’s life in jeopardy to get what he wanted, except in this case it was his father’s.
And I really do not see what Neal did vs. what Snow and Charming as the same thing.

How was Rumple going to free himself from the Vault of Eternal Goo? Rumple didn’t even know what was going on outside the Goo-Vault. The last thing he knew, he killed his Papa to save Belle/Bae and then POOF.

Little Roland problem: he had Robin Hood’s permission. And Mulan was there. AND it turns out that this super scary shadow can be locked up in a coconut with a candle. Trembling in my boots over here. What other option did he have? Yes the writers could have had him discover some magical bean in the castle but Oh, dear LORD the complaining we would have done. And that’s the only way to get to NL: bean or shadow express. So while it wasn’t the best option, it was his only option. And if he hadn’t done it, people who don’t like Neal would never have stopped yelling about how he wasn’t willing to fight for his family. When it comes to this fandom, Neal often can’t catch a break (same can be said for many characters, I know, but Neal receives more vitriol than others)

He wasn’t but EVEN Belle argued in that same scene after knowing the Wicked Witch’s plans, that they could find a better way to save Rumple without putting his life in danger. The only difference between what happened in Quiet Minds and other times, that this time it did not pay off for Neal.
So, in the end, taking the easy way which is Neal had always done, ended up costing him his life.

Look how cute they were in Skin Deep!
