Just because the original story is disturbing as well doesn’t mean that this depiction is not disturbing. They are the same. The original was disturbing and wrong and so was how it was shown in ONCE.
I don’t think Regina loves Henry because she is not capable of it.

She wasn’t angry at him. She was trying to talk some sense into him. I thought it was quite obvious what the writers were trying to do. I actually thought Belle’s love for Rumpel was quite clear. When we see her again in Dreamy, she’s going on and on about true love and how valuable it is. She was obviously talking about Rumpel. She was hurt and still missed Rumpel. That was made abundantly clear.

I agree. Belle was obviously still in love with Rumpel when we saw her again in “Dreamy.” And the last scene between her and Rumpel in “Skin Deep” was about her trying to get Rumpel to review his actions. She was telling him to stop being a coward and face life. She was pleading with him. She wasn’t angry. That was evident by the fondness in which she spoke of him in “Dreamy.”
And like others have said, I wasn’t surprised at all by Belle’s reaction to Mr. Gold in the finale. They’re true love, so of course she’s going to be happy to see him. True love doesn’t just fade away. So actually, her rejecting Rumpel would have been out of character and would have screwed with the continuity of the show’s mythology. True love is true love. There are various different types of true love, but it’s love nonetheless. And no one has been able to stay away from their true love. There have been characters on this show who have resorted to killing because of the loss of their true love (Regina). So, of course Belle was going to be happy to see him again.

^THIS. The writers all of a sudden changing established canon would have been a mistake. They can’t just say Belle and Rumpel are true love in one episode, and then completely destroy that idea in another episode. It would have cheapened the idea of true love and would have created a huge plot hole.

Exactly. I would have actually thought something was wrong or off if Belle rejected Mr. Gold in the finale. I would have thought that she was brainwashed or something. It’s already been proven that Belle and Rumpel are each other’s true loves. And having her all of a sudden being deathly afraid of him would disprove that. I know in the real world you can love someone and still be afraid of them. But like it or not, this show isn’t about the real world. It’s about fairytales and magic. Its rules for true love are different from those in the real world. It’s supposed to be pure and unyielding. There can’t be any doubt or fear in it. That would taint it, thus making it impure and not really true love. Normal love? Maybe. But true love? Definitely not.

Exactly. Belle didn’t recoil in fear because she’s not afraid of him. She loves him. So yes, she’s going to be happy to see him. And having her all of a sudden hate him or fear him would be a complete retcon of the already established canon about their relationship. So Belle’s reaction to Mr. Gold in the finale was completely in character and not at all shocking or confusing. I don’t think the writers would say they’re true love, only for them to go back and say “whoops, we made a mistake. We were just kidding.” 😆
July 10, 2012 at 12:26 pm #150421LisaFromOHParticipantI wasn’t surprised when Belle wasn’t afraid of Rumple in the season finale, but I was surprised that her first words to him were, “I love you,” considering how their last interaction had gone. But I guess they didn’t really have time for Belle and Rumple to get into a lengthy discussion at that point.
July 10, 2012 at 1:08 pm #150463PriceofMagicParticipantBelle had been separated from Rumple for 28 years and with everyone having both their fairytale and Storybrooke memories, they’re going to realise how long it has actually been, so Belle isn’t likely to hold a grudge against Rumple for something that happened 28 years ago.For the first thing Belle to say to Rumple is she loved him isn’t too surprising because they’ve not seen each other for 28 years. Also Rumple’s reaction to when Belle kissed him was based off his own insecurities “I knew this was a trick, I knew you could never care for me” and he only freaked out when Belle echoed Regina’s words of “any curse can be broken”.
All magic comes with a price!

I do believe really the only way for Regina’s imprisonment of Belle to not really just be a holding pattern for her storyline would be for Regina to have spent that time brainwashing her. But it’d have to be subconscious, sleeper type, since Belle didn’t take one look at Rumpel in the finale, recoil in fear and run away, so she hadn’t be conditioned to fear him on sight.
Just because Belle didn’t react in a way in which you found fit, doesn’t mean that she’s been brainwashed or conditioned. I wasn’t surprised by Belle’s reaction to the Rumpel in the finale. I saw that storyline for what it was. The show has presented them as true love. We have evidence of this via their kiss in “Skin Deep.” I knew that was the case, so I knew she wouldn’t fear when she was finally reunited with him. I honestly believe we’re overanalyzing something that will never be addressed on the show.
This whole debate is just a symptom of the original tale.
What in the world are you talking about? Why would Regina condition Belle to like Rumpel more? That’s ridiculous. 😆 And that’s not what I said.
I was saying we KNOW Regina didn’t manage to psychologically condition Belle to turn on Rumpel in any CONSCIOUS way since that’s not what she did. So anything Regina managed to do to turn Belle AGAINST Rumpel was more subtle if she did anything. I’m talking about a THEORY of long term planning on Regina’s part to turn Belle against Rumpel, rather than overt brainwashing to hate him on sight.
Edit: For the record in fiction, a sleeper agent is unaware of any conditioning and acts perfectly normal until activated, then they act against the enemy target, then have no recollection of what they did while activated. This form of subtle mental programming would have no effect on Belle and Rumpel’s reunion, not changing her reaction to him in any way. I was saying this now seems the only type of feasible programming on Regina’s part that would still in theory be possible.

I don’t think Belle was pleading with Rumpel to change his mind, she was chewing him out. She seemed angry and disgusted with what he had just done to her the whole yelling and swearing and grabbing and throwing to the floor and locking up thing.
