I was just thinking there would be more complexity in the scene since their relationship is complex (like Belle said, their love is layered). I would have guessed Belle’s thoughts when the curse was broken would have run more like this, “I’m Belle! And that’s Rumple, my true love! But the last time we saw each other he was so horrible to me. Which Rumple is he right now; the man I grew to love or the one who treated me like dirt?” But, like said earlier, they didn’t have very much time for that scene. I hope we see more of those layers in season 2.

It seemed almost a relief that she got to say them outloud–maybe she was going to go back to Rumpelstiltskin after she thought he had cooled down, or maybe she hoped that he would come to regret his actions and make amends with her. But from her conversation in Dreamy, she seemed fond and still very much in love with Rumpelstiltskin.
There is also the fact that Regina captured her alive–obviously to use her as bait, and Belle is smart enough to know that Regina was planning on using her as a pawn. That, and perhaps Regina gloated about it–she is the type who just loves to show off in front of her victims.
Also, a lot of people addressed the fact that Regina did not use Belle when the time came for when she needed to force Mr. Gold. The writers answer that here. 🙂

So many people have stated something along these lines, but I can’t remember anything about it. I guess I assumed that was Belle’s part of the curse: being locked away and that she had been off adventuring in Fairytale Land before the curse.
July 12, 2012 at 11:17 pm #151467JosephineParticipantRight now, we don’t really know when Belle was captured by Regina, just that at some point Regina got her in her clutches. Everyone has their own theories.
Personally, I think she was on her way back to Rumple when the Queen’s henchmen captured her. She had Charming at one point, I don’t see why should couldn’t have been holding Belle captive. Part of me thinks that she really did make it back to her father’s and he threatened her with the scourges, or even did it, and she escaped to go back to Rumple, but really I think after her talk with Dreamy/Grumpy she decided to return to him. We’ll just have to watch and see what really happened.

That is a good point. It hasn’t really been confirmed, but it is a strong speculation. We know she did make it to the tavern after Rumpeltiltskin kicked her out of the Dark Castle, and then the curse got enacted sometime afterwards. She may had been on her way to her father, perhaps she was going to travel like she always wanted, or she may have even wanted to return to Rumpelstiltskin and try to talk to him again. It can be assumed (for now) that Regina had captured Belle sometime after the tavern with Dreamy/Grumpy event.

But if Regina’s intention was never to use Belle against Rumpel, then why did she capture her in the first place? I like the theory that Belle wasn’t actually captured, but like Jefferson, being locked up would be her own personal curse. Regina went out of her way to pull Jefferson out of Wonderland and lock him in his mansion for 28 years. So, I’m not surprised that she would do the same to Belle. However, I’m not clear on why she would punish Belle. It makes no sense. What did Belle ever do to Regina?
July 13, 2012 at 1:49 am #151532elleParticipantYour welcome. 🙂
I think, from what I gathered, that Regina was going to use Belle. But she wouldn’t have been able to just say, I have Belle–Rumpelstiltskin would have used ‘please’ and just rescued Belle, not to mention that she would be forced to endure his wrath. Not sure how much Regina knows about Rumpelstiltskin’s early years of being the Dark One, but I am sure she knows enough (the incident with Moe comes to mind) to know that he is not a forgiving man.
The writers said that Regina would have had to have waited for a moment when she could have used Belle–I don’t think Regina had counted on the please. She did think he wouldn’t remember that, and I also think she underestimated the power that it would hold over her.
Also, Regina’s happiness comes from everyone else being miserable. It is why she hadn’t tried to get rid of Mary Margaret before Emma arrived–she enjoyed the torture she inflicted on everyone. At the end of Skin Deep, she looked really happy to see Belle curled up in the room–that also goes to Rumpelstiltskin, keeping him away from his True Love. I also think that Regina enjoyed keeping one of the few people that meant to Rumpelstiltskin away. She knows he has a certain amount of power over her, and I think it gave her enjoyment to keep someone that he wanted.

But we don’t really know if she pulled him out of Wonderland specifically. He may have found a way back to the Enchanted Forest before the curse was enacted.
See, there is still so much we don’t know about the fairytale land stories. I was just thinking today that all I really care about now are the Storybrooke stories, but I’m rethinking that tonight. Between taking back the kingdom, Belle’s capture, Cora, and whatever happened to the Mad Hatter, we still have a lot to tell. Add in Sleeping Beauty and Mulan’s story and there really is much more to tell.
