which Belle are we supposed to analyze? season 1&2 Belle, or season 3 Belle? Belle is not Belle anymore. Do you remember that Belle who discovered the buried gold inside her “beastly” employer’s heart? Remember that Belle who was so sad that Rumple lost his son, she cried for him, the Belle that loved Rumple so much that his feelings mattered most to her? Remember that Belle, the one who said that she will never stop fighting for him? Belle, who understood why she had to stay in SB while her beloved man goes out to the land without magic to look for his only son? Belle, who understood and accepted that she had to stay in SB while her beloved man goes to save his grandson at the risk of his own life, but who had complete faith that she will see him again? Who is she now? Now she is an immature baby. Let’s analyze her one subject at a time: 1) Belle, who was mature enough to understand and accept that she had to stay in SB: she is now complaining about “he didn’t need me” that’s why she didn’t go with them on the ship, because she wasn’t important enough. Belle became a little girl who needs to feel important! Who cares that her boyfriend was going to his death, SHE doesn’t feel important! 2) Belle had complete faith that she will see him again did she really believe that she will see him again as shown in season 2? No. season 3 Belle was sure he was already dead. Did you see her reaction when Ariel said she had a message from him? “he’s alive?” she asked, astonished. (yay! He needs her help! Now she has something to do! Now she can feel important!) 3) Belle used to care about Rumple’s feelings… now all she cares about is herself. When she enters his shop for the first time since he was resurrected she is all happy that her sparkly boo is back. Never mind HOW he got back. HIS feelings don’t matter. His only son died because of him, but SHE got him back. Yay! 4) Belle said she’ll never stop fighting for him It took them 8 months to decide to break into the castle. Not to free poor Rumple, but to get information from him so they can save Snowing’s new baby. She knew Robin-Hood, she knew he can break into the castle. Did she have to wait so long to break in and try to free him? Steal the dagger? Something? Where is all that fiery “I will never give up on him”? Isn’t part of never giving up on someone, trying to free him from a cold hard cage? Even when they did finally break in, freeing him was only the secondary goal, a side effect if Zelena is defeated.
1) I think it’s very understandable to be afraid that your man doesn’t really need you when he is the most powerful sorcerer of FTL and you are just an ordinary, non-magical woman. Belle was just being human there. And she did miss Rumple and was worried about him.
2) Rumple went to NL to face his undoing. Remember, the prophecy? He thought he was going to die. Belle knew this so of course she was happy and surprised to hear Rumple was still alive.
3) I must admit that this bugged me too. Not the fact that Belle asked him not to go after Zelena, but HOW she did it. No condolences or making sure Rumple was okay, only that demanding “promise me you won’t go after Zelena”. Yeah, it felt pretty harsh. But maybe it’s just the writing..
4) The writing again..
[adrotate group="5"]June 28, 2014 at 9:16 am #275552PriceofMagicParticipant1) I think it was perfectly human of Belle to feel useless in Storybrooke whilst Rumple was off in Neverland going to what he thought was his death. Belle wanted to help Rumple and she felt like she was doing nothing. Belle may have said “I will see you again” to Rumple when he left, but a week on her own with no word on what’s happening with Rumple, and doubt was probably starting to creep into Belle’s mind. What if Rumple didn’t come back? What if that was really the last time she saw him? Belle wanted to help but felt helpless so Ariel bring Belle Rumple’s message gave Belle the boost and hope she needed.
2) Ariel’s message from Rumple brought Belle renewed hope. Up until that point Rumple thought he was going to die in Neverland until he thought about Pandora’s box. If someone tells you they are going off to die and you don’t here anything from them for a while, you begin to think they might be dead. Ariel’s message from Rumple gave Belle renewed hope that Rumple would return.
3) Belle should not have tried to make Rumple promise not to go after Zelena. He didn’t promise, and whilst I get why Belle asked him not to for his sake, she could have worded it differently. I agree that’s down to the writing rather than the character herself. At the same time though, it seemed like Regina was going to let Zelena go free and give her a “second chance” which seems quite insensitive of Regina. If it had been Henry that was killed because of Zelena, you can bet Regina wouldn’t have been so forgiving. So I think everyone was a little insensitive of the fact that Rumple had lost the most because of Zelena.
4) Zelena seemed to keep the dagger on her person at all times so freeing Rumple in FTL may not have been an option at that point. Belle was able to speak to him and get the required information when the others were ready to just give up. The idea was to defeat Zelena which in turn would’ve freed Rumple since, even if Rumple wasn’t in the cage, Zelena only had to command him with the dagger which would’ve made him a danger to everyone. Zelena already tried to force Rumple to kill Belle once, he’d have never forgiven himself if he had actually harmed her. Whilst Zelena still had the dagger and was free, Rumple was a danger.
All magic comes with a price!
