Beginning with Episode 13, the intro to OUAT includes the narrator saying: “Who knows the truth? (Shot of Mr. Gold) And who can break the spell? (Shot of Emma & Henry followed by a shot of August W. Booth). With this encouragement, I’ve been pondering how Emma, Henry and August can break the curse that imprisons all the fairytale characters in Storybrooke Maine. Have you been wondering about this too?
Henry is due for a “coming of age” phase in his life that could take all of Season Two. Jared Gilmore has proven himself very capable of this more challenging role for Henry. After finding the hero he needed in Emma, Henry seems ready to become a hero himself. I’d like to see Henry run away from Regina’s home (as most “coming of age” narratives begin) and repeatedly escape Regina’s capture. As Emma heroically struggled with whom to trust and when to trust her own judgment, Henry could face similar hurdles. He would be in constant need of allies to keep him hidden, to provide food & shelter and cultivate his own courage, confidence and creativity. This sets up dangers for Emma and August becoming: over-protective of Henry or too obvious when harboring him. However it also provides them with countless opportunities to nurture Henry’s “inner hero” to full fruition which may be essential for breaking the curse.
Following 1×17 Hat Trick, Emma seems called to cultivate her magical abilities and her power to cope with their consequences — since “all magic comes at a price”. That could also take all of Season Two full of partial successes and setbacks such as using bad advice, under-estimating obstacles, doing inadvertent harm to her loved ones, and escalating her adversaries use of their magical abilities. She seems like the perfect character to: explore true love’s ability to break any curse and to break Belle out of captivity in SB.
August seems likely to provide level-headedness to the turbulent emotions of Emma and Henry. I suspect he already knows many other characters’ limitations and fixations which can be exploited with clever strategies. He seems poised to pit evil against evil and turn the attacker into his/her own worst enemy. He already understands how to bait another’s interest by being mysterious and being in no hurry to make his next move. He may know everyone’s real story and use that to predict their reactions to provocations, lures and traps. Knowing each character’s potential also sets him up to be an empowering mentor to everyone committed to breaking the curse. He may not have any of the magical abilities of a Gandalf or Professor Dumbledore, but he seems wise enough to orchestrate the combination of Henry’s heroics, Emma’s magic and his own knowledge of the truth.
If anything like this unfolds, the Curse won’t get broken by these three characters until Season 3 at the earliest.

She next has to start believing in herself and to trust the ones who are trying to help her (Henry, Snow, August and Dr Hopper). She next has to start connecting with Charming who is her father; I think he is the final piece of the puzzle to begin this “final battle” that was foreseen by Rumple prior to the curse. I also believe that this is a very complex curse and has to be dispelled in different stages and it will have to take every single person/ character effected by the curse to realize who they are to start this process. Henry outlines this whole plan starting with Operation Cobra; which is stage one and identifying first who everyone is. Everyone has not been identified and known to both us and them (Henry, Dr. Hopper and Emma), the main members of the Op. From what Henry had suggested it seems that there are many other operations the the breaking of “The Dark Curse”. We all need to rewatch every episode and pay attention to everything Henry says to Emma. I am ready to watch every episode and had seen so far everyone at least 3 times and there will always be something that I have missed from reading every theory posted.

Yes to all you said! By framing Emma’s challenge of getting the message of many other characters keeps the show from being overly focused on the trio. Requiring everyone in SB to recall who they are in FTL could spawn many episodes where particular characters have their own set of problems with facing “the truth” of who they are and where they come from. Awakening others could create great teamwork for Henry and August to scheme how to open some closed minds, alleviate some fears and remind others they “always have a choice”. 😀

Emma has a bad problem with being to blunt with her judgement ( & she fails miserably in terms of being sneaky. ) I’d leave all the information gathering up to Henry & August. Because if worse comes to worse, no one wants to see Rumpelstiltskin fighting alongside Regina.
There’s also the fact that Regina has people like Sydney in her pocket; people who have proven useful already.
I think the first thing they would need to do is find out how large Regina’s network is & how far her influence reaches.

I expect August to be a significant resource in keeping the trio’s work covert. He has shown us a great sense of being mysterious and appears keen on withholding information. Once Henry trusts him more, the two could follow your info gathering recommendation superbly.

In addition to assessing Regina’s network, it will help break the curse if the trio can determine how many members of her network are eager to turn against her once their is a winning opposition to join. In Oz, the palace guards exclaimed “Hurray for Dorothy!” when their Wicked Witch was dead.
Emma has a bad problem with being to blunt with her judgement ( & she fails miserably in terms of being sneaky. )
I’m hoping Emma will become less quick to judge and thus better at being sneaky as she realizes she really is the daughter of Snow White and she really has magical abilities. The soliloquy from Jefferson in the Hat Trick episode appeared to move Emma in that desirable direction.
April 14, 2012 at 12:07 am #142085charmingParticipantThe Wizard of Oz references may not mean we will see a Wizard of Oz scenario but quite simply a hint of a strategy to take. The Wizard of Oz story may be an Art of War for fighting Fairy Tale Villians. The trio does really need to first find out who they are up against and how many? Next they need to know who is on their side and how they can help? Then if the WoO is just a plan and not a hint of an up coming episode then the trio plus whoever is on board should make that happen.
April 14, 2012 at 12:44 am #142088the wizParticipantGiven how inventive the show’s writers have been with “Snow White & the Seven Dwarves”, I’ve abandoned my expectations that the appearance of characters from ANY story would result in an episode that recreated that story. I’m greatly enjoying the departures from conventional tales and see this as an improvement. Thus I agree with you (charming):

April 14, 2012 at 1:08 am #142092charmingParticipantThank the wiz very much. I am glad that my theories are plausible and by having even just one other person agreeing with me even if it is just the one makes me feel…..well…..charming!!….I guess for a lack of a better self description.
April 14, 2012 at 1:15 am #142095the wizParticipantYour most welcome, charming. I hope you’re right that the show works in some of The Art of War. Defeating evil calls for “winning without a battle”, “knowing oneself and one’s enemies” and “practicing emptiness” — not for going ballistic and reviving the Ogre Wars.
April 14, 2012 at 3:44 am #142138charmingParticipantWow, you just explained Rumple/Mr. Gold’s theory of winning. While Regina and Emma believe in going out there and just kick some butt. Wow! You are onto something. For sure.
