Bec, I think you’re close to understanding what we are trying to say here.

I agree that it was totally inexcusable for Rumple & Reggie to do those things. No one ever made excuses for them. Yet, for some reason, many here on this thread, are trying to excuse & justify what Hook did. Why? Because they all think the guy is hot. Can you see what is wrong with that type of thinking?

It just doesn’t work that way. Talk about setting a double standard. Rumple & Reggie: how dare they do that! Hook: poor guy, I get why he did it.

It’s driving me nuts to hear so many going on about the reasons why he did it. Oh, the poor man’s grief, his heartache, his despair, his anger, etc……So what! Still doesn’t justify beating on a woman and trying to murder her. He hasn’t redeemed himself yet and may never do so. He is suppose to be the villain not the “poor heartbroken pirate”.

Again, a character using theatrical, choreographed, verging on cartoonish means to kill/harm another character is NOT the same thing as watching a ‘man’ beat a woman into unconsciousness.

To be honest, I really dont see the difference. It doesn’t matter how they harm or kill a person, you are taking a life. The technique/style you use does not count, it doesnt change the fact that you are harming someone.

If my father or husband abused me and/or my kids….no, he WOULD NOT be redeemable.

Thats exactly what i said- if it happened in real life it would be completely different, there is no way the abuser would be forgiven. However it is a TV SHOW! Its not real! So anything can happen.

Using such a realistic means to portray a character and/or their frame of mind puts him on the same level as a loser abusive husband/boyfriend/father.

Again, I understand what you mean. But I will say this again, it is a TV show so anything can happen. If a woman who rips out hearts and crushes them and kills her own father etc. can be redeemed, then so can Hook. BUT if this happened in real life then there is no way they can be redeemed or forgiven. It just doesnt work that way, but in a TV show it can.

Now that you put it that way, i completely understand what you mean. It is very wrong for people to make excuses for him because he is “hot”.

I don’t think people are intentionally making excuses for Hook just because he is hot. It’s a TV SHOW people, and a fantasy one at that, so as mentioned previously, anything can happen on Tv. And Hook’s character is supposed to be a villain, and what do villains do? They do hurt/kill people from time to time, because it is in their nature to.

I don’t think that it was trying to send a message that says “violence against women is acceptable”, it is simply just part of the plot. Plenty of tv shows present even more violence than what is seen in ouat, but it’s just a tv show, people need to calm down a little šŸ˜›

Ok, this is the last thing I’m gonna say on the subject.

The fact that this show is ‘fantasy’ promotes theatrics in the ‘violence’ scenes with villains and heroes.
    .
The fact that they showed ‘realistic’ violence in a fanatsy type show is what stands out about that particular scene.

The scene with Hook abusing Belle ‘in a realistic manner’ doesn’t fit in with the campy, coreographed violence that has, so far, been portrayed on the show.

That type of realistc violence is more along the lines of a CSI or Criminal Minds type show, because they are ‘realistic’….or, at least, supposed to be.

You wouldn’t expect to see the ‘un-sub’ to be going around crushing bloodless, glowing, plastic hearts into dust on one of those shows because it’s not realistic.

By the same token, I didn’t expect to see such ‘real’ brutality on a fantasy show.
Had Hook waved his arm and Belle flew into the wall and was tied to it by protruding vines, fine…..that doesn’t happen in real life……but abuse does.
    Theatrics vs. Realism.

I think you put the finger right on it with the word “campy”

OUaT is a campy show and hook is not a campy character…

Hook doesn’t have any supernatural powers so the only way he would attack people would be with physical force, I don’t think he discriminates against people, he’s a villain and they get rid of people that are of no use to them. It just comes out looking bad to some people because it happens to have been physical and to a woman but still, I don’t think he was thinking “oh she’s a woman, I shouldn’t/should hit her” but more of “this person is no use to me”.
Also Emma knocked out Hook as well, so we’re even : P

What about that guy who hit Snow across the face (S1 ep. 16) and actually made her bleed, and it looked like he too was about to finish her off, and he had no reason to do that to her

Maybe not the right post to ask this question but it’s been part of the discussion here so..

What is it about Belle that everybody likes so much ??
Sure she is a nice girl and all. She says some likeable and agreeable things like “Nobody desides my fate but me”..and such.
But to me, the character is just still kind of flat. The nice girl who likes everyone but always gets taken advantage of and put in captivity, but that doesn’t even bother her it seems. No no ! she forgives and forgets and loooves the people putting her in jails…..

I think you are right, the fact that it was Belle made it that much worse. Because she is so naive and innocent hitting her in fairytale land is the equivalent of drowning puppies in our world.

I like her because she’s sweet and understanding. And her introduction in ā€œSkin Deepā€ did have a strong impact on me. She’s one of the few characters on the show that is truly innocent. So, whenever something bad happens to her, people are going to be upset.

That’s the key word. Innocent. So many terrible things have happened to her and she didn’t deserve it. Because of her association with Rumpel, she’s been treated as a nothing but a chess piece and it’s sad to watch. She’s a really sweet girl and doesn’t deserve any of the things that have happened to her. She reminds me of Snow in that respect. The only difference is that Snow was able to defend herself. Regina kidnapped Belle before she ever got the chance to learn how to live on her own.

And I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I think she’s a very strong woman. She’s one of the few people who can tell Rumpel off without getting killed. The girl’s got guts! šŸ˜†
