I agree with your theory about it being a “pirate name” . I`m not sure if they will bring in Davy Jones. I think he is the first challenge Hook faced as a pirate.

And to go one step further, maybe in the past Hook had “bad form” as a pirate against Blackbeard and it parallels to “good form” in the present day?

Sounds good to me. I just can’t believe they gave their SAILOR character the last name of JONES, of ALL the names, seriously, if there wasn’t gonna be a Davy Jones connection in there somewhere. That surname just seems like the perfect opportunity for an interesting story.
