Oooo, I like that idea!! Wizards & sorcerers, people go to them for healing…like you or I would go to a doctor. And as you say, it could explain his connection to Ruby in Storybrooke. I like this theory A LOT! Good thinking, slurpeez. 😀

I guess most people speculated that she meant Rumple, because he was the closest thing to a “wizard” we had at that point, but if they’re dipping into Arthurian legend now, Merlin is a contender if they want to go back and tell more of that story.
I have this hunch that Dr. Whale could be that wizard who gave Granny the magic cloak for Red. The reason is he is obviously connected to Ruby somehow in SB, so it would follow that his FTL counterpart is somehow related to Red’s fairytale story. Perhaps Dr. Whale is Merlin! ❗
that’s an interesting thought but I don’t see why he would have been troubled by his memories in the finale. I mean, wasn’t Merlin supposed to be a good guy?

At first, I was totally convinced that Dr. Whale had to be a villain for several reasons like the one one you mentioned, him calling Regina when David started to rouse from a comma, when he had a one-night stand with MM, or when he stared at Ruby lecherously. Yet, others have pointed out the curse makes people do what they wouldn’t ever do in FTL. The best example of this is David Nolan, who was the opposite of what a Prince Charming would be.
So far, Dr. Whale has behaved more or less like what you’d expect a villain to behave like in SB, but that may because he’s acting the opposite of his true hero identity in FTL. The curse could’ve made a protagonist act like a major creep. If that’s the case, we could theorize about his revelation moment. Perhaps, after spending 28 years cursed as a lecher, he turns out to actually be noble and his epiphany moment when the curse is lifted is actually a good thing. It’s just a theory anyway, and I could be way off the mark.

Jennifer Morrison did say there would be a new love interest this season, and as far as I can tell Lancelot could be perfect for that. He seems like he’ll have some issues to work through, but at the same time is a really good and honorable person, kind of like Graham was, and we all know he and Emma were great together. So… maybe? I’d say it’s possible.

I just get the impression from the bio that he already has a true love out there (despite not being able to be together in EF) and she(or he) could pop up at some point. If it is Guinevere: things could be simpler to deal with in Storybrooke, Maine. Divorce, which would probably be messy, is now an option.
He may also be working for Regina or King George: which could be a problem…but he could definitely be a contender for ‘love interest’, along with the other new males in the cast…except Phillip: pretty sure he’s taken at this point.
