I just thought about this tonight while re-watching season 2 of Farscape with my boyfriend. Rumpelstiltskin seperated from his son in season 1 and we still don’t know what happened to him the next time we see him in season 2.
In Farscape, one of my favorites characters is Ka D’Argo, he’s a Luxan warrior who sometimes goes into fits of “hyper rage” on the show, but only when provoked of course. Before a certain episode I watched tonight, he didn’t know what happened to his son but when they are reunited, D’Argo’s son is a grown man but a bit bitter towards his father b/c he thought his father abandoned him (which he didn’t).
Then, there’s Chiana who is D’Argo’s love, she’s independent (sometimes thieve) with the attitude of a teenager. They’re not exactly the same but I liken her to Belle. And the closest I can think of paralleling Emma is John, who is the main character on Farscape.
That’s just a small example of OUAT TV show parallels. I don’t know about other shows or characters but I thought it would be an interesting discussion.

Think Fringe is similar in some ways, you have parallel universes. In Fringe you have characters in each universe that are opposite to their counterparts. In Storybrooke for example you only have one person but their characters are opposite as well- Charming and David Nolan are completely different.
Just a thought, could this mean Baelfire has turned bad in our world.October 31, 2012 at 8:57 pm #158795beautyistruthParticipantGreat topic! Breaking Bad is one of my favorite TV shows and I can’t help but see extremely strong parallels between Rumple and Walter White’s character arcs. Both start out similarly: meek, soft-spoken, gentle and somewhat bullied. Both start with the intention of protecting/providing for their families, which goes terribly wrong. Both eventually begin embracing their power and role as Heisenberg/Dark One. And, while this hasn’t been entirely confirmed in Breaking Bad, I’m pretty sure both end up losing their families as a result.

OMG. OMG. OMG. No you didn’t just bring up Breaking Bad! I worship that show! I completely agree. Rumpel/Gold is very much like Walter White. It’s almost eerie how similar they are. 😮
Another infamous character Rumpel reminds me of is Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vadar. He starts off wanting to protect his loved ones, but in his quest for answers, ends up becoming the very thing he hated the most.

Isn’t it, though? These two Walt moment just scream Rumple to me.
The first is his infamous “I’m the man who knocks” speech. “I am not in danger. I am the danger. A guy opens his front door and gets shot… you think that of me? No. I am the one who knocks.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMEq1mGpP5AThis second one, “say my name” is so similar to Rumple’s “what’s my name” moment with the guards in “Desperate Souls” that it’s eerie!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy_DASt7hDsGlad to find a fellow fan on these boards. This show is making the wait for Season 5, part 2, bearable 🙂

It took me a while to realize this, but Snow/Charming and their FTL story actually reminds me a lot of Elphaba and Fiyero from Wicked (musical verse). This surprised me because I thought that given Elphie being the reexamined Wicked Witch, her parallel would be with Regina. But, she’s such an unquestionable protagonist in the musical that I actually think her story parallels Snow’s much better. She’s on the run, she has propaganda posters against her, Regina has half the kingdom thinking that she’s a murderess, arsonist and traitor, and she’s trying to escape from the kingdom and live out the rest of her life alone somewhere. It’s all very Elphaba-esuqe. And Charming is quite Fiyero-esque, with his being trapped in an unhappy engagement, general gallantry, and perchance for saying “I’ll find you!” And there’s even a love triangle in present-day Storybrooke. Fiyero’s occasional screw-ups even reminds me of David Nolan’s screw ups. I guess the plot parallels aren’t always perfect, but I find a lot of similarities in terms of characterizations and situations.

It’s not as close a parallel as the others, but it does feature threats from alternate universes and a rich description of the habits and customs of an alternate universe which has some similarities to the medieval world, just as does the Enchanted Forest.
With all these alternate universe themes cropping up in OUAT and other works, I keep hoping to see a character named Hugh! (Hugh Everett developed the many-worlds interpretation of Quantum Mechanics which has served as the inspiration for many fictional accounts of parallel universes.)
