I saw an excellent theory on Tumblr. The image on Anita’s grave is the symbol of the child of the moon. Yet, it’s also the symbol on the necklace Mr. Gold gave Henry, and that symbol is also on a potion vial we saw in Rumplestilstskin’s collection in 1×16 Heart of Darkness.
Child of the Moon
Obviously this is referring to Ruby and werewolves. Or is it? That’s certainly one meaning, but what if the ‘Child’ in question is a literal child? What if it’s Henry?
I’m really intrigued by the fact that the bottle Gold put the potion in, the one that Henry is going to be wearing, has a moon symbol on it. Oddly enough almost exactly the same as the moon that Red put on the grave for her mother. Crescent moon, dot in the middle. A star. Or a sun (same difference?) Almost like the moon as trapped the sun. Henry puts out the fire. Fire, red, burning, like a sun. Henry, with the power of the moon (cool, pale light.)

My own take is that as Red learned to control her instincts as a child of the moon, so must Henry learn to control his actions while his soul enters the netherworld. Perhaps the potion contains venom of a werewolf, which is symbolic of being able to control two natures: human and wolf. Henry must learn to control in actions between the two worlds of the living and of the dead. Perhaps Mr. Gold put some of the potion from the vial into the necklace with the lunar emblem etched on it. The necklace certainly contains some kind if magical serum in it, since Mr. Gold used an eye-dropper to put some clear liquid into the locket.
Also, the red room which features in the dream sequence is a color very closely associated with Red Riding Hood/Ruby. We have yet to discover which wizard made the red cloak for Ruby. I’m now wondering if the cloak was indeed from Rumplestiltskin, since he obviously knows all about the child of the moon symbol and the power it contains.

Interesting that they made a reference to the sun. When I saw the headstone, the symbol reminded me of the astronomical symbol for the sun, (a circle with a dot in the middle), with a side cut out of it to form the symbol for the moon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomical_symbols#SunI hadn’t thought about it before, but the themes with Red and Henry in this ep are definitely similar, so it’s cool that they seem to have linked them by using that symbol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Turkey
but I don’t think it has anything to do with the show. Just an observation nothing more.November 15, 2012 at 1:01 am #160805MyrilParticipantThe wolf den had a North-African or maybe Middle Eastern touch, so ashley_2754 that the symbol reminded you of your flag is maybe not a coincidence. It’s a star and crescent, a symbol already used in ancient Near East, in Byzantium it was a symbol of the goddess Hecate, who was connected with the Moon, magic, witchcraft, sorcery, knowledge of herbs and crossroads. Hecate sometimes was shown as dog-shaped or with a (she-) dog (no wolves, but some people can’t tell the difference).
It’s an interesting catch, that crescent and star are on the necklace given to Henry. and as well for classification of the boddle. Even without a direct connection as in this theory it makes some sense, if you think of the connection with Hecate (poison, herbs, magic as much as crossroads do fit in all three cases maybe)
If it was meant more as crescent and sun it could stand for duality, something makeing sense with werewolves as well.
And right, maybe it was Rumpelstiltskin who made the red cloak for Red. he has a story with pretty much everyone in FTL, so why not with Grandma Lucas and Ruby too.

Some other points I found interesting and seemed to have relevence:Also notice the necklace is silver….the cresent moon is the Alchemical symbol for silver.
Being a pure metal, it is why legend has it that ‘evil’ beings could be killed with silver bullets and why Vampires could not be seen in mirrors….silver backed mirrors/objects cannot reflect ‘impurity’.The symbol on the wraith’s medallion was very similar to the Alchemical symbol for Antimony.
In “The Doctor” the premise about magic/science was basically referring to Alchemy.
In Mary Shelley’s novel, Dr Frankenstein was studying and very much into Alchemy….which is what lead him to believe he could in fact re-animate his ‘monster’.November 15, 2012 at 11:53 am #160836GrimmsisterParticipant@Gypsy wrote:

wow I had no idea. Now I can’t wait to see the story behind the symbol.
