Captain Hook is jumping on board Once Upon a Time full time.
ABC and producers just upgraded Colin O’Donoghue to a series regular for the season’s “back nine” hours — even before his character’s first episode has aired.
The Irish actor (The Rite) was originally signed for a recurring role on the Sunday night hit fantasy drama. Given the swooning fan reaction to our first photo of Hook posted this morning, we can’t say we’re surprised by this decision. Guess the producers must have liked what they were seeing from O’Donoghue on set too. We’ll meet Hook in the Oct. 21 episode, which is titled “The Crocodile.” Last season, producers similar upgraded Emilie de Ravin’s Belle from a recurring role to series regular.

I like it from the standpoint of more eye candy; although, I think he’s wearing too much eyeliner in some of the preview clips, but it feels really soon when we don’t even know if the actor and/or character will be that good yet.
Perhaps they were planning this all along, and didn’t want to say anything earlier, but I just hope it’s not fan service because Hook is already so popular. Well I mean yeah, they have to try to keep most fans happy, but don’t just wedge it in there awkwardly like I felt they’ve done to some other things that became popular like Jefferson and Rumbelle.

I’m thinking they had this coming anyway- maybe he will play a bigger role than we think he will – I remember a H&K interview where they said Hook will be a complex character who may not be as bad as we think he is, I’m thinking he’ll be more someone who had to make some hard/bad choices but for the right reasons- rather than bad choices for the wrong reasons.
I’m a little like you on not sure about him being a regular, esp as I’ve never liked Hook as such, but when I read H&K spoiler on him, I liked the idea immediately 😉
I’m thinking he may end up being a love interest for Emma as she opens up to love etc- not saying a full on lets get married relationship, but just feeling out relationships in general as she hasn’t really had any 😉October 4, 2012 at 7:46 am #155401hjbauParticipantIf they are keeping him around and he is with Emma then i agree he is probably one of her love interests. That would allow for other interactions in fairytale land then just between Snow and Emma. Though i want to see those Snow/Emma ones.

Yes, I agree. The fact that Colin was just upgraded to a series regular further tips the balance in this direction. (In my mind anyway). Just recently, Jennifer Morrison described Emma’s potential suitors, there will be more than one, and they’ll be the ones pursuing her, not the other way around. Jennifer said Emma was a tough nut to crack, but that these suitors would be doing a lot to try to get through her emotional armor. The character description for Hook describes him as a ladies man, with the manners of a proper gentleman but with a troubled past. He sounds like an interesting guy to challenge Emma out of her security net (but hopefully he’ll reform from chasing other women around if he turns out to be a suitor for Emma).
Also, I’m getting the feeling that if Hook is a potential suitor for Emma, that might make him a contender against Baelfire (assuming Bae is a suitor for Emma). If Hook is Baelfire’s true dad, that would be some very extreme drama.

He sure does- I’m really looking forward to seeing how that one plays out…although poor Emma is going to be hit with a lot this season lol
LOL- Not another Bae centred triangle, that’d be the 3rd one now 😉
I’m now not 100% on Bae & Emma, I don’t know if that would just be to much of the same insecurities/ baggage to bring to a relationship &make it work long term- but then again if they’ve both grown from it & healed, I suppose it could work ….. I’m going on a Bae & Emma break for the moment lol 😉

Assuming they intend to introduce other Neverland characters in the future, it’d make sense for Hook to still be around so we can see his relationships with them, as well as developing him as a character in his own right.
