With the Wicked Witch and Oz on the agenda for the second half of the season, now would be a good time to take stock of the Oz references that have been piling up since the Pilot and speculate on their implications for the story from here out.

To begin with let’s start with a running list of Oz references that have been both implicitly and explicitly revealed:

    1) Flying Monkeys on a page in Henry’s story book after Emma rams the town sign.

    2) Regina’s 2×02 line “I don’t care if they turn me green.” when she retrieves her mother’s spell book from Gold.

    3) Crystal ball (like Prof Marvel’s and/or the Witch’s), (ruby) slippers, and the implication that Jefferson has just come back from Oz and has met with the Witch. (which implies that Rumple knows about the Wicked Witch to some extent)

    4) Regina’s fireballs reminiscent of the one’s Wicked Witch threw at Scarecrow in the 1939 film.

    5) A Season Two promo entitled “The Witch is Back” referencing Regina’s dark magic returning.

    6) The green curtain leading to the Land of Oz in the gateway room Regina and Jefferson found themselves in during Hat Trick.

    7) Cora declaring she’s not “wicked” after tipping over the phone tap on Regina’s desk.

    8) Regina’s frustrated comment to Emma, “Fine, you want to follow the evil munchkins dirt path? Be my guest.”

    9) Neal’s search for a portal in his father’s castle resulting in the discovery of the crystal ball and his statement that “ruby slippers” amongst other things make portals.

    10) Bean portals (for that matter any passage between realms outside of magic mirrors) resemble as Rumple put it “a tornado.”

    11) Snow declaring Regina to be “nothing more than an evil witch.”

    12) Victor Frankenstein being referred to initially as “the Wizard.”

    13) Poppies used as a knock-out agent. (by Mulan, Emma and Tink)

    14) Rumple using a curtain as a partition to separate his office from the showroom of the pawn shop. (A reference to the man behind the curtain?)

    15) The arrival of the new villainess, namely the Wicked Witch of the West.

    16)  The overall theme of the series that our main characters as Adam and Eddie have said are all looking for home, as Dorothy was in the Oz story.

On Wonderland 1×1 – Alice was sent to a mental hospital because of her telling the stories about Wonderland, believing that they are true. They wanted to give her a treatment to help her forget her memories. Will. broke in & helped her escape to WL. Same thing happens in Disney’s “The Return to OZ” with Dorothy. Aunt Em sent her to a mental hospital for shock therapy to remove her OZ memories. A new friend helped her escape and Dorothy ended up in OZ. The new friend turned out to be Ozma.

Victor Frankenstein came from a world without color to a land full of color and magic.

In 1×9, August’s license plate says NR 23 Kansas. Plus in 2×6, August wears a belt buckle with a green stone in it, which is out of place in the scene. You don’t see him wear it again. Theories had started that August is somehow connected with OZ.

In 1×10, the vet at the SB animal shelter could be the scarecrow from OZ since he knows at lot about birds.

In 1×19 – In the back room of Gold’s shop, 2 oil cans that look similar to the one the Tin Man used be seen on a shelf behind Gold.

In 2×5, Jefferson also said statements like “I introduce you to the wonderful wizard” and “off we shall go to see him”.

    Aunt Em

Speaking of, it’s always been stuck in my head that the Oz story had an Em(ily) with a Henry, and we have an Em(ma) with a Henry. Might mean absolutely nothing, but it’s something I’ve always thought was sort of curious.

    amendment to the list:

Regina’s apple tree and the unpleasant apple trees it was Dorothy’s misfortune to try to eat from.

In the episode “The Doctor”, people have said that Jefferson, Victor, and Rumple represented the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. Jefferson ended up losing his mind when he became the Mad Hatter, Victor wanted a heart, and Rumple was a coward.

    Other Notes:

Regina & WWW both love fireballs…a trait inherited from Cora

    WWW looks like Cora

Jefferson taking Regina to see “The Wizard”

Green Curtain in multi portal room

Regina and Cora disappear in bluish black smoke…must I say the same entrance of the WWW in the Wizard of Oz?

Cora’s quote about the sacrifices and deals she had to make…still no backstory on what that was, and clearly she and Henry Sr. were demoted for some odd reason because they lived in a Manor in the countryside. I still think King John and King Richard are Regina’s uncles…

Adam & Eddy appareantly having the WWW in mind since the beginning, and have tossed these obvious subtle hints towards us from the start…

Found another one in a YT video. It’s from 2×19, when Regina used a tracking spell to hightlight David’s truck’s tire tracks in yellow. She followed “the yellow brick road” to the bean field.
