I’m not entirely sure of Cora’s motives here except that maybe she saw a lot of herself in Ana and also that Ana would do what Regina would not. Cora almost seemed as if she actually cared about Ana or at least dreamed of her success as if she were truly her daughter. Otherwise, why would Cora want to teach someone else to be like her?
I think it goes back to what Slurpeez just said: Cora and the Red King had an uneasy relationship.
Yes, the biggest motive was that Ana is VERY Cora like and Cora could control her unlike Regina, but Cora now has inroads to Ana’s kingdom that they are friends. She can control both kingdoms by ruling one and controlling the ruler of the other

Also, it was probably a strategic move politically to depose of the white king (eventually) and to replace him with her own protege in the nearby kingdom.

I know we won’t see it, but I want to know how Ana felt when she learned that Cora up and left WL with Hook.

If that was the case for Cora, wouldn’t she be worried that Ana might one day decide that’s what she wants and go after her? That didn’t happen, obviously, but still.

I don’t know..Cora was very self assured. I think she knew that she could control Ana by keeping some things just out of reach. Plus, for Ana, Cora became a mother substitute–her own mother never loving her or showering her with praise. I think Ana would bend over backwards to appease Cora to keep her love.

Ana found someone just like her mother but who APPROVED of her in WL. (Of course her mother would have been pleased with the marriage to a king, too…)

Yup. But I think a good question is: did Cora actually approve of Ana or did she just know what buttons to push? I think Cora’s agenda was power and control and playing on Ana’s insecurities was the best way to get that control, even if it meant she was the power behind the throne.

It was creepy how easily Cora found Ana’s weakness, her mother, and then played into that weakness. Ana was putty in Cora’s hands. She was easily molded into what Cora needed her to be.
It was amazing to watch the total transformation of Ana as she embraced her newfound powers of magic. Her whole body language changed. Her posture, her swagger, her facial expressions, her confidence. Wonderful acting by Cora as well. I really loved their scenes together.
