I don’t know..Cora was very self assured. I think she knew that she could control Ana by keeping some things just out of reach. Plus, for Ana, Cora became a mother substitute–her own mother never loving her or showering her with praise. I think Ana would bend over backwards to appease Cora to keep her love.

I just rewatched the episode again. Their first meeting is really interesting–Ana starts to bow and then Cora puts on this show about “oh no. You’re getting married tomorrow. I should defer to you.”
And then she does two things that court etiquette teach you not to do: 1) Turn your back on the royalty and 2) Walk in front of them (you’re supposed to be a bit behind if you’re walking and talking to them)
Cora assumes the higher position, despite saying that she should be in the lower. Tricksy Cora is tricksy.
