In the traditional tale of Rumplestiltskin, the miller’s daughter had to guess the imp’s name to keep her first-born child. The title of this episode suggests the plot will at least follow that direction. Since Rumple has been around for centuries, it’s entirely possible that his name was lost to history by the time he met Cora. All of his contemporaries would have been dead for about 200 years (except for Smee and Hook, who were in a different realm). It’s possible that Rumple was only known as the “Dark One” when he introduced himself to Cora, and so she had to guess his name. That is why Cora scribbled his name in the back of her spell book. In 2×2, We Are Both, Regina reads the name in her mother’s book and summons Rumple by his name, after which he introduces himself to her. By the time Rumple meets Cinderella, Prince Charming, and Snow White, his real name was in wide circulation again.
Exactly. While it’s curious how well known his name was in the latter days of FTL, given tradionalRumple’s close guarding of his name, considering the timeline they’ve constructed, it’s totally believable that his name had been forgotten in the centuries leading up to the story with the Miller’s Daughter. I’d say it’d be very in character for Rumple to want to be known purely as “The Dark One”, considering that name could strike fear into people, but “Rumplestiltskin” was associated with a weak coward by all who had known him by that name. Makes sense that he’d want that name to die out and be forgotten. Perhaps part of the reason he wanted Cora pushed through the looking glass was because she’d had his name written down, and now someone else, (Regina) had found it out.
[adrotate group="5"]February 27, 2013 at 7:04 am #175708MatthewPaulModeratorPeople already theorized that Cora figures out Rumple’s name by finding his dagger with his name written on it. Hence how she knew about the dagger being his weakness.
February 27, 2013 at 1:29 pm #175723RumplesGirlKeymasterCora could find his name on the dagger and guess it to be his name thus keeping in line somewhat with the traditional Rumple tale. BUT it doesn’t explain how she knows how it works. She called it the Kris dagger in Manhattan and I don’t think we’ve ever heard it called that before. Her knowledge of the dagger seems pretty extensive. So I think that if the dagger is how she found out about Rumple name, it isn’t all she found out.

In Manhattan, are you sure Cora called it the Kris dagger and not the cursed dagger? Too bad this episode isn’t on DVD so we could check the subtitles. Anyway, there are a lot of things Cora knows about Rumple, his son, his dagger, and the specifics of the curse that are very specific. If she and Rumple were lovers, as the spoilers suggest, perhaps she charmed the Dark One into giving up his secrets, which was why Rumple was so careful not to repeat the same mistake with Belle. In Skin Deep, Rumple said something close to, “Perhaps you just want to learn the monster’s weaknesses!” which makes me think Cora did just that. š”

When I had my CC on it said “Kris” dagger both during the live airing and next day on Hulu but that could have been in error, obviously, since we’ve never heard it called that before.
I like your last point. Rumple could see Belle as being another Cora, trying to get his secrets to destroy him, like Cora did. I actually like that a lot because it adds another reason for why falling for Belle in Skin Deep scared him so much. They keep giving us more things to make Rumple even more sympathetic.Edit/Afterthought: if Cora is this manipulative, as I think she will turn out to be, then maybe she only made Rumple think that Regina was his daughter. What better way to have the Dark One on your side and ensure that no harm ever comes to you or your kingdom? But then Cora got too egotistical, thought she could control him and thus broke his heart by telling him and Regina wasn’t his at all, but Henry/George/

Nicole F.: Can you tell me anything else about Rose McGowanās character on Once? Iāve been obsessed with her since Charmed!
Thatās a great question, which is why we posed it to McGowan herself. We already know sheās playing a younger version of Regina in an origin episode airing next month, but did you also know sheās part of a love story? āI fall madly in love, and then it ends tragically,ā she tells us. āMost of my stuff is with Rumple. And it was an amazing experience and Iāll see them again next season.ā Next season? Does this mean weāll see her character again? āItās in the works,ā McGowan tells us coyly. http://www.eonline.com/news/392297/spoiler-chat-scoop-on-the-walking-dead-once-upon-a-time-glee-revenge-and-moreCora was actually madly in love with someone? With whom though? Rose says most of her scenes were with Robert Carlyle, so maybe Cora was madly in love with Rumple! Or maybe she means Cora was in love with someone else, like King George, but it ended horribly. I can’t wait for this episode! š

February 27, 2013 at 2:32 pm #175733PheeParticipantIt’s interesting that they gave the dagger a specific name. A kris is a wavy bladed dagger from SouthEast Asia. Makes me wonder if we’ll get the history of the dagger at some point, and if it might somehow be tied up with Mulan’s sword, which can deflect magic. Two powerful blades, both from Asian cultures, surely that can’t be mere coincidence, right? I mean, they didn’t have to throw that word “kris” in there and thus officially make Rumple’s dagger of Asian origin, they could have just kept on calling it a dagger. I am suspicious.

My money is on Cora having been in love with George and in lust with Rumple. Hussy. š

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KrisThanks, Phee and Rumplesgirl, for that info! How interesting there is an actual history to the kris dagger in SE Asia. We saw in 2×1 how Rumple was able to use his dagger to summon the wraith, which Mulan called the Qui Shen. Perhaps the two are more intimately connected than I previously realized. Will we see a backstory between Mulan and Rumple?

February 27, 2013 at 4:36 pm #175757RumplesGirlKeymasterUh. Cora madly in love? Are we sure that’s not…a lie?
I doubt it’s Rumple given Cora’s manipulative control over Gold when she forced that kiss. If anything, he fell for her after she seduced him and then she broke his heart (for which she must die!).
Well, Slurpeez. This may prove you right with King George. If she fell for George but then made herself barren and then he divorced her, that would break her heart. And then she marries Henry Sr but isn’t in love with him."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"February 27, 2013 at 4:48 pm #175761CrownedWithLaurelsParticipant. Anyone catch that? That error completely confused me while reading! They said Regina and not Cora… uh-oh, they’re going to be confusing the audience big time!
