    What the seer said:

You will be reunited with your son, and it will come in a most unexpected way. A boy… a young boy will lead you to him. But beware, Rumplestiltskin, for that boy is more than he appears. He will lead you to what you seek. But there will be a price. The boy… will be your undoing.

Henry was with Rumple when he went to Manhattan, Rumple was expecting to see Bae, but not find out that Henry was his grandson. Henry is youngish especially when compared to the likes of Felix and PP but, at 11, would be considered an older boy. Henry has appeared to have unwavering belief throughout the series.

Roland is young. Both Rumple and Neal now have history with Robin Hood who is Roland’s father. Roland enabled Neal to get to Neverland. Rumple thought Neal was dead and never expected to see him again. So far Roland has just appeared to be Robin Hood’s young son

Roland can fit the specifics of the prophesy just like Henry can. Plus we know Robin Hood will be getting a lot of screentime in the second half of the season, Roland will likely be there too.

The point of prophecies are to be a vague as possible to be frustrating, especially on a TV show where you have to take the drama to the max.

From a storytelling perspective, making the boy in the prophecy a boy who was maybe on screen for 2 whole mins would be out of left field and utterly confusing for the people who watch this show casually. Those people aren’t us. They might remember that RH had a son and that he was cute but they are going to be incredibly confused as why all of sudden that boy has such a pivotal role in this whole thing.

The prophecy itself states that the a young boy will lead RUMPLE TO BAE. This did not happen. Bae was led to Rumple through Roland, who was a bit of a plot device but also sets up the idea of a family for Regina as RH’s arc is tied more to Regina than anyone else.

There are probably tons of boys who could fit the prophecy if we really sat down and tried to tie everything together. Some people though it was August, remember? “young” is subjective. 17, the frozen age of PP, is “young” as in “not adult” which legally, in the USA, is 18. Yes he’s much older than that, but he is constantly referring to himself as a boy and others refer to him as a teenager. Henry is young and has greater ties to the entire show and cast and has the heart of the truest believer. He is of greater import than Roland, no matter how cute he may be.

From a purely storytelling perspective, making it Henry or Pan (or both!) makes more sense given that they are the two central boyish figures in the our story. To try and assign it to another would only make the casual viewer (of whom there are MANY MORE than the online fan culture who spend hours pouring over these matters) very confused and probably disappointed with the result.
