So as many of you, I’m not very happy with what the writers have done with Rumbelle, so I decided to do some thinking today and determined that either:
1 – The writers simply don’t give a crap about Rumbelle
2 – The writers are just messing with us
Note : I created this thread in the spoilers forum because I might use some spoilers info to explain my crack pot theory. I will use the name Morfetus when I refer to the Rumbelle’s baby and Morpheus to refer to the actual god of dreams.
So hoping is not #1 … what if ….. someone (maybe Morpheus) swapped places with Rumple when they were in the dream world and the Rumple in Storybrooke is not the real Rumple?
Rumple and Belle have been acting kind of OOC since they came back from the dream world if you think about. At first when I was coming up with my theory I thought that maybe Belle was the swapped one, but then I did more thinking and came to the conclusion that it would make more sense if Rumple was the swapped one since it would be more difficult for us (the viewers), Belle and the “heroes” to notice a change in his behaviour since he tends to act fishy and secretive most of the time. The only one who could potentially notice something off is Regina (who IMO knows him best) and she actually does point it out in the last episode!
1 – We never see what happens to Rumple after he comes back from the dream world, alas we don’t even see him come back!
For all we know, he gets knocks over the head and Morpheus (or Morfetus) takes his place.
2 – We were never told what the price was to use the sands of Morpheus to get inside Belle’s dream.
C’mon this is magic, there is ALWAYS a price, my 5cents go on one leaves (Belle), one stays (Rumple). Sure Morfetus’ TLK woke Belle up but who payed Morpheus to use his sands? I doubt it was Mr. Hyde (RIP.. so sad).
3 – The haircut
I know they had to do it because of Bobby and his role at the Trainspotting 2, but still I found it a bit OOC. Belle tells him “You cut it for you, because you are sick and tired of looking at the man in the mirror. But you forget…I always see you for who you are”. Rumple simply agrees and walks away.If I was another man in another’s man body, I think eventually it would bother me to look at myself in the mirror and see another man, haircut? sure why not, not my body, so who cares! Perhaps Belle wasn’t really off with that statement, although the follow up phrase “I always see you for who you are” probably tipped off the body snatcher hence why he walks away without saying anything.
4 – Rumple’s behaviour/actions
– Regina points out that he really is a “new man”
Foreshadowing maybe?– Gets sloppy with the dark one dagger.
C’mon after being controlled by Zelena, he should know better…– “Threatens” Belle/ edgy behaviour
Yeah Rumple might be an asshole, but he always lets Belle get away with anything5 – 6×09 Changeling – Scottish folklore (Elfhame)
So people at spoilerville say that 6×09 Changelings is a Rumbelle episode, I know Bobby is Scottish but still, that tape + Scottish folklore + changelings … could it be = foreshadowing on who the changeling target is gonna be?Anyway, to make a long story short… the crackpot theory at last…
Morpheus a distant relative/friend/you name it of recently deceased Hades makes a deal with him (or Zeus if you’d like) for Rumbelle’s baby to avenge his dead. When Belle puts herself under a sleeping curse as advised by Zelena *cough* Hades idea *cough* Morpheus sees the perfect chance to take advantage of the situation to plot the snatching of the baby.
When Rumple comes to wake Belle at the Dream world, Morfetus wakes Belle up, etc, Belle goes back to Story brooke and right before Rumple is about to go back, the real Morpheus shows up, swaps places with Rumple and goes back to Storybrooke instead.
Body snatched “Rumple” task is to make sure the Rumbelle baby is born safe and sound so that he can swap it for the changeling when it’s born, with the help of Blu of course, the big bad evil (I wish).
And that’s it for now folks, hope you enjoyed and would love to hear what you think!
[adrotate group="5"]October 17, 2016 at 11:01 pm #328863RumplesGirlKeymasterIt’s definitely an interesting theory–especially since Changelings is such an odd title.
Your theory sorta hinges on a few things but one of the biggest is that Rumple is acting OOC. You’re gonna get some push back on that front from some people and I think it ultimately come down to how you’ve viewed Rumple since the beginning and his development since S3B (his devolution as a character for me began when Nealfire died).
At his core, Rumple has always been torn between his desire to protect his family, be a good man, and his desire to be able to control his own life/destiny, to wield power previously denied to him. This struggle made him such an interesting character for so long: how can he protect his family if it involves using Dark Magic and distancing himself from those he loves to the point where they actually leave him after rejecting him. It made his dependency on dark magic more akin to drug addiction in which the user knows that the magic isn’t good for them. There’s some self awareness that their lives are in shambles and it usually happens after the aforementioned rejection. Think about Rumple clawing at the ground, desperate to go after Bae when he fell down the portal.
The Rumple you see now, post S3B, is a character who isn’t vacillating between those desires. He’s chosen and he wants it all. He “loves his dagger;” and he loves it as much as he loves Belle and Bae and his new son. I think the inner tension comes not from not liking what he sees in the mirror but that the people he loves now see nothing but ugliness and are still rejecting him. For Rumple, he’s doing exactly what he’s always done–protecting those he loves–but with the added bonus of not needing to be a different man for anyone.
I don’t know if it’s OOC so much as he’s settled into who he wants to be. He made up his mind about the nature of his identity when he chose to take on the Dark One’s Curse again. It’s no longer about negotiating his identity with how others want him to be; it’s about making them accept who he is.
With that in mind, I think Rumple really is Rumple.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 17, 2016 at 11:56 pm #328864nevermoreParticipantLike @RG outlined above, I also think this is actually Rumple as he is written now. Is this the character development/choices I would have liked to see? Nope. Not even close. But this is what we get.
If you ask me, the best thing that can happen for those two as characters is to walk away and start fresh somewhere else. I used to adore Rumbelle, but this is a horrible trainwreck at this stage.
But I think you’re onto something . Something’s up with Morphetus/Morpheus. There’s just no good reason for Rumple’s kid to have any connection to Greek mythology. And technically, Hades still had that deal to claim Rumple’s firstborn so my guess is, this somehow played out. And considering the changeling title, my guess is that the baby either (1) isn’t actually Rumple’s, or (2) the baby is taken away by the Greek pantheon to be raised as Morpheus. This of course would explain why the kid hates his dad de facto.
On a side note, A&E did answer the question about whether Morpheus is really Belle’s son positively, but as I recall they never answered whether he is really Rumple’s son. Or did they?

They confirmed that he really is Belle AND Rumple’s child:
Can we trust Morpheus’ claims that he’s Rumple and Belle’s child?
KITSIS: Yes.
October 18, 2016 at 8:21 pm #328946AKAParticipantIsn’t a changeling thought to be a fairy child that was switched with a human child? If that is the case, maybe Morefetus has been switched and isn’t their actual son at all. Or better yet, maybe Rumple’s mom was a fairy (shady blue) or the dark fairy. I always thought it was weird how much magic fate interfered with Rumple’s life. Maybe it wasn’t all a coincidence. Or here is another crazy theory, maybe Blue steals the baby from Rumple and Belle because it is a dark one baby. This would explain the changling part of the fairy stealing the human baby.
