I hope Poseidon and Triton aren’t brothers (or father and son) in the show, because a) why would Ariel have been so clueless about Ursula if she was family and 2) if they want me to believe that Joanna Garcia Swisher is biologically related to Merrin Dungey and Ernie Hudson, I won’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Was this the casting call for the King with the hard won crown, or are we still thinking that was Aurora’s father? I’d rather the Poseidon situation be that he wrestled the Sea King crown away from Triton, instead of them being related.

Poseidon and Triton are traditionally father and son in Greek mythology, so I have my doubts they’ll do away with that. If Ursula and Ariel really are family members, it could be a situation where Ursula is disowned by their family and never mentioned around the family again. Wouldn’t be the first situation where someone tried to hide a relative from history. We just saw that with Ingrid. In the Broadway show, Ursula actually was exiled from the kingdom. Also, being this is FTL, they might be willing to look past common genetic logic, in regards to Joanna being Latina, while Ursula and Poseidon are African American. Not to mention, Poseidon’s wife could still be white. I mean, I recall a few people theorizing about Tamara being Robin Hood and Marian’s daughter back in late Season 2, despite Robin being white. Though, for all we know, Ariel might not be related to Poseidon and/or Triton at all in this version.
The King casting call was specifically for 415, which Poseidon is slated for, so definitely seems to be him.

I was one of the people on that train, and while the skin colours weren’t completely matchy, I still thought it possible because they were matchy enough that I could buy it if they’d given Tamara a white guy for a father. Merrin and Ernie both have that that deep, rich, chocolate brown skin, so unless there’s some recessive albino gene that Ariel got lumped with, there’s just no way I can buy a genetic link there.
Casting call…
For Episode 15, Once is casting the possibly recurring role of a king whose crown was hard-won, and the fight to keep it has taken a toll. He is also described as “handsome, though not refined, and highly protective of his family.”

In the Broadway show, Ariel’s family is a big interracial rainbow. Her father is black, Ursula (her aunt) was white but also had a black understudy. She had two black sisters, as well as an Asian, Hispanics, etc and if you look closely none of them even have the same hair color or tail design. So it has been done before. For all we know, Triton and Athena (Ariels mother) could be white/hispanic and so could Poseidon’s wife/Ursula’s mother. My issue with them having Ursula and Ariel being related isn’t more so about race but about how they should have introduced or at least hinted at it when Ariel was on the show in S3 if that is what they are going to do. Then I’d have less of a hard time believing it. There is always the theory that Ursula revealed herself to Regina after supposedly going unseen for a thousand years is because she didn’t want anybody to *bleep* with her niece. But then one must wonder why Ursula didn’t restore Ariel’s voice.

Also, this means we see him in more than one episode right? Interesting..

Pretty much this. As I said, since this is a Fairy Tale world, I think I can let this slide, even if we’d argue about the genetics involved in real life. Especially when these aren’t even humans, but merfolk. Either way, it’s adding much needed diversity on this show.

I don’t really know much about the musical so wasn’t aware of that. Still, seems a bit odd to me. *shrug* Though even the fact of a mermaid and an octomaid being genetically related makes me a bit, “WUT?” Just because they’re both sea creatures that doesn’t mean they’re genetically compatible.

Yeah, there seemed to be a total disconnect between Ariel and Ursula with the way they were portrayed. If Poseidon is, “highly protective of his family”, then an estrangement in the family doesn’t really make sense for why they were portrayed as not knowing each other.
December 20, 2014 at 12:51 am #293715MatthewPaulModeratorI should mention that the idea of Ursula and Triton being siblings was originally thought of for the original Disney movie, too. There’s a deleted part of the opening song “Fathoms Bellow” on the DVD that mentions it. They just decided to re-explore the idea for the Broadway musical.

Also Ursula and Triton being the children of Poseidon is mentioned in the Broadway show. In the tv series I believe triton is the son of Neptune, but ya know, tomato, tomahto.

Yep. It’s mentioned in the Broadway show for sure. And yeah, Neptune is just the Roman name for Poseidon. They’re the same deity, different names.
