Henry starts out his journey in ep 101 with a stolen credit card. In this case, the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree, as complicated as his family tree is. Virtually every person who is on his family tree has stolen in the past…and virtually all of them have been imprisoned (though sometimes unjustly) as well.
Cora: Steals hearts. Also people (how did Henry Sr. wind up in her vault?) And compasses. Etc etc. Was imprisoned in Wonderland by Regina (though she kinda got over that by becoming Queen of Hearts).
Henry Sr.: I don’t think he’s ever stolen, though he supported both his wife and daughter as they did pretty awful things. Cora imprisoned him in Wonderland somehow though.
Regina: Also steals hearts. And, just in S1: MM’s box, Kathryn’s letter to David, and (via Moe), Gold’s chipped cup, among other things. Was imprisoned by the Charmings in FTL and for her own protection in Storybrooke (that didn’t work well). Oh and by her mother a few times. And her husband locked her in her room for cheating on him.
Leopold: Not so much a thief, though perfectly willing to marry an unwilling girl. And we don’t see him imprisoned…he just gets killed. Oops.
Eva: A jerk when she’s younger but we don’t see thievery there. Though Cora felt that Eva took something significant from her. She also doesn’t get prison time but does get killed.
Snow White: Bandit Snow all over the place. She’s stealing from Charming the first time they meet. And spends time in various prisons of various types (including the curse/coffin) in both worlds. Over and over.
Charming: Not quite the thief his brother was, but he helps Snow steal back his ring when the trolls won’t just give it back, and also went to steal back the beans from GOAT. Totally stole water from the siren without even bothering to leave an offering. And spent time imprisoned by both George and Regina, and briefly arrested in connection with Kathryn’s disappearance.
Great-Uncle James: Definitely thiefy–stole tons from the giants. Not imprisoned, but as David said, “paid the ultimate price for his arrogance.”
George: Totally stole from the giants. And Ruby’s cloak. And Jefferson’s hat. Not really a nice guy in general. Presumably he was put in prison for his crimes at some point but other than a deleted scene we don’t know yet.
Ruth: Other than trading a son for her farm, she’s pretty innocent. And she likewise just gets killed, not imprisoned. Yaaaaaay. (Same with David’s father.)
Emma: By the time she was 17, she was stealing stolen cars and went on a crime spree with Neal. Though she’s on the side of the law now, she’s still got thieving tendencies–like when she needs a compass to get home, for example. And she, too, has spent a lot of time in jail–in Phoenix, in FTL present, and in Storybrooke.
Neal: See aforementioned crime spree with Emma. Also, he was stealing bread within six months of leaving FTL. And he helped Rumple steal the dagger. Has not spent any time in jail yet…though he does tend to get stuck in different worlds a lot.
Rumplestiltskin: He mostly deals for the things he wants, though he’s not above just taking it (see Ella’s Fairy Godmother’s wand). And his whole Dark One schtick started out with his theft of the dagger. (Also a murder.) He’s not fond of other people stealing from him, though… Anyway, he’s done time in FTL and Storybrooke.
Milah: She left Rumple to become a pirate. Pirates steal by definition. Strongly hinted that she stole the bean from Smee, too. Other than feeling imprisoned by being married to Rumple, though, we don’t see her jailed…just killed. Ouch.
Hook: Pirate. Lots of examples on screen of his thefts, including Bae’s scarf. And Belle’s memories. Emma locks him up a bit though she tends to go for latching him to the nearest tree, pipe, bed etc instead of an actual jail. Tamara seems to have the same tendency.
Belle: Like Charming, she tends to steal stuff back rather than actually steal for herself. (See Bae’s scarf.) But she aids thieves (Robin Hood) and isn’t actually opposed to theft if it’s for a good cause. As for being imprisoned–has any character been more imprisoned in more ways for more time in any show like ever?
Moe: Totally stole the cup. And a bunch of Rumple’s other things. Oh, and his own daughter (kidnapping counts as theft, too, right?). We don’t see him imprisoned, but he did get caned pretty harshly. And totally rejected by Belle (*sniff* and at the same time You Go Girl. I still want to see them reconciled–this is the man she surrendered her freedom for and presumably cried every night over for some time.)
So, anyway, point is: Henry’s the youngest in a long line of thieving jailbirds. And just being “good” doesn’t mean you’re not at least one or the other.

Hello, Shades of gray.
Nicely drawn out. They’re quite mess up, this CharMillStiltskin Clan, aren’t they?

As for being imprisoned–has any character been more imprisoned in more ways for more time in any show like ever?
So true, so true. Belle needs take some karate or kung fu and then make her way down to the shooting range to learn how to knock off a few rounds.

August 18, 2013 at 8:28 am #205495PriceofMagicParticipantI don’t think Belle should reunite with Moe.
Screwball Ninja’s essay gives good reasons why.

Basically Moe is only interested in controlling Belle rather than what’s best for her.

Keeper of FelixAugust 18, 2013 at 8:35 am #205504RumplesGirlKeymasterI waffle so much when it comes to Moe. On the one hand, he is Belle’s father and one could make the case he was doing what was best for her in his eyes (I don’t agree with this but I have an outsider perspective that Moe does not); on the other hand, after The Crocodile I don’t ever want to see him again.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 18, 2013 at 9:11 am #205507PriceofMagicParticipantMoe wanted to erase Belle’s entire identity just because he didn’t want her around Rumple. Even though Belle asked him to stop, he just ignored her and carried on trying to send her over the town line. We saw the state Belle was in when Hook shot her over the town line and her father was willing to put her in that position.
So long as Belle is with Rumple, Moe is constantly going to try and split them up. Moe either has to accept Rumple as part of Belle’s life or he won’t have a part in his daughter’s life.
With Rumple in Neverland, I can see Moe trying to wheedle his way back into Belle’s life.

Keeper of FelixAugust 18, 2013 at 12:09 pm #205517JosephineParticipantI think Moe really needs to reconcile with Belle. I think if he’d come forward with a heavy and repentant heart that they could mend their relationship. He’ll never approve of Rumple, but what he plotted and almost accomplished did come from a place of love. He needs to accept that she’s in love with him (I’m getting flashes to Trisha Yearwood’s “She’s in Love with the Boy”)
I’m my dream imaginings, I can see him visiting her in the hospital when she was a blank slate and finally realizing what losing her memory actually entailed. Part of me thinks Moe just didn’t think through his actions–just went into a mode of “My daughter’s alive. I need to remove her from the Dark One no matter what the cost.” Maybe he even came across her as Lacey and realized that was even worse still.
I’m just saying that we’re all rooting for Neal and his dad to come to some kind of understanding where their relationship can move forward. Why can’t Belle that same chance?

August 18, 2013 at 12:14 pm #205518KebParticipantMoe’s been a jerk, but there’s room to change. Belle cares about her family, and as far as we know, he’s it. You’re right, he would at least have to accept Belle’s choice to be with Rumple for it to work, but I want to see that happen.

August 18, 2013 at 12:18 pm #205519RumplesGirlKeymasterIf Rumple comes back from NL either no longer the Dark One or having the power of the Dark One changed for a force for good, like he originally wanted, then Moe would have to learn who Rumple really is. He think Rumple is a monster because all he’s ever known is him in his full Dark One glory. He doesn’t know who Rumple really is (same goes for the rest of the town, really). But if Moe was forced to confront his prejudices against Rumple and see that part of what made Rumple, Rumple, was the power of the Dark Curse then that might be a step in the right direction.
