When Emma asked Mr. Gold how he could’ve planned for her to become sheriff or that she’d agree to him being her “benefactor,” Mr. Gold said he could recognize a desperate soul. Who else do we know who said the same thing? It was Rumple’s “benefactor,” Zoso (the Dark One), who identified Rumple as a desperate soul. In reality, he wanted Rumple to kill him to become the next dark one.

In SB, Mr. Gold also told Emma that now she was sheriff, perhaps she could repay him the favor she owed him for the deal they made in episode 4. Mr. Gold also warned Regina never to underestimate someone who was acting for their child. This has a double meaning. On the one hand, Emma was running for sheriff to show Henry good really can win. Who else was acting for their child? It was Rumple, who killed the dark one trying to save his son, Balefire. I think this means Mr. Gold is still acting for his child, and part of his agenda is to get his son back. He’s willing to go farther than it takes. Also in episode 16, Mr. Gold asked Emma if she was willing to go as far as it takes, and she said farther.

Could Mr. Gold possibly being setting up Emma to get back Balefire? Could he want Emma to become the next dark one? I hope not, but the parallel between the two is so striking as to be disturbingly close. After all, he said similar things to her that sounded eerily similar to what Zoso said to Rumple in FTL.

Interesting theory. I had just thought that Rumple can now recognize desperate souls because it’s an ability that comes with being “The Dark One.” My theory is much more boring. 🙂 With these writers, it could be either or something entirely different. They’re so creative.

Yeah. Looking back, I get shivers when I realize Emma becoming the dark one may have been foreshadowed as early as 1×8.

WAY BACK IN THE BEGINNING… Adam and Eddie said they had a 5 year plan to do this show…. it was when DISNEY started interfering and they started using other stories … FROZEN.. that the show got off track from what was originally planned.

Are we giving them too much credit?
