I’ve noticed heaps of references to the Wizard of Oz this season ESPECIALLY in relation to Neal/Bae. With the recent spoilers suggesting that Neal isn’t Peter Pan, I thought it would interesting to see what everyone thinks about Bae as the Wizard of Oz?
Here are a few of the hints:1. When Bae falls into the green portal, Rumple says it’s “like a tornado!” – might be a nod to the tornado in the Wizard of Oz. Based on pics and spoilers,it's obvious he went to Neverland first but maybe he went to Oz later and came to the world without magic from Oz (by maybe meeting Dorothy and getting her slippers – the ones Rumple wanted from Jefferson earlier in the season).
2. Dorothy has an Uncle Henry and Aunty Em – funny how Neal’s son is Henry and his ex is Emma. Again, more associations with the Wizard of Oz.
3. Neal is frequently associated with characters that are similar to people like the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, etc. As mentioned in another post “Silver slippers”, Rumple is like a Cowardly Lion. Also, August is like a Tin Man who has restricted movement and wants to be more human. Also, when Emma confronts him about leaving her, he says he was “getting you home” which is like the Wizard’s promise to Dorothy (not saying Emma is Dorothy but the Oz reference is there).
4. Everything in Neal’s apartment is green – the Wizard lived in Emerald City.
5. There is strong bike imagery everywhere Neal goes and it was mentioned in another post that this could be a nod to The Wizard of Oz – the witch’s bike. If you don’t believe me, look at these:

As mentioned in another post, there is also a poster of a bike that says “Ride” in the New York apartment.

However, it doesn’t explain the fact that Bae is approx 285 yrs old and didn’t age.
Not aging isn’t associated with Oz, it’s associated with Neverland.April 11, 2013 at 11:05 am #185564DemiletoParticipantI don’t think Bae is intended to be any specific storybook character other than a random Lost Boy. There are pictures of the actors who play the Lost Boys in Stevenson, so I imagine we’ll see them arriving in our world in the finale, meaning Bae did all that aging from 14 to 35-36 here. I don’t rule out, however, the possibility that Bae or the Lost Boys as a whole stopped by Oz or even Wonderland (“Cleaners and Hatters”) at some point.

1) Sarah3: I went ahead blacked out some of the spoiler-y stuff because some people around here haven’t seen (and really don’t want to see or know) the spoiler pics from the last few episodes. In the future, please if there is something spoilery and you’re not posting in the spoiler thread (either general or for that specific episode) please use the spoiler brackets.
2) Demileto: I did the same with your post because again, this is not a spoiler section and people haven’t seen those pics and some people REALLY don’t want to be spoiled.
2) I agree there are LOTS of Wizard of Oz references and I think it’s a land we will see soon-ish. Like maybe the end of S3, beginning of S4. As for Bae though, I’m not sure. I think he went to NL first. But it’s possible that he traveled to other lands during that time. He was there for like 250 years.

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?” -- Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

Sorry about that. I admit I thought briefly whether I should edit the post and put that or not, but since the OP started the topic by mentioning recent spoilers I just shrugged. I’ll be more careful next time. 🙂
April 11, 2013 at 5:03 pm #185613vilyaParticipantDidn’t Neal say (and I could be wrong) that this world wasn’t his first stop? That to me kind of hinted at the fact that not only did he probably go to Neverland, but that there might have been several worlds he went to before he finally found this world, the one without magic.
April 11, 2013 at 5:07 pm #185614RumplesGirlKeymasterEmma: I thought you were suddenly a pirate and were going to take a ship.
Neal: Yeah, well, we still got to get his ass to the ship.
Emma: So you know Hook?
Neal: It’s a long story. Short version, is this world wasn’t my first stop when I left home.
Emma: No?
Neal: If it was, I’d be a couple hundred years old by now.
The fact that our world wasn’t his first stop AND that he can drive a pirate ship AND knows Hook are all pretty big indicators that he spent time in NL. But it doesn’t mean it was his ONLY stop.

The cruel irony remains, had Rumple known Bae didn’t directly come to a land without magic, he would have probably found him without needing the dark curse. Jefferson offered Rumple the use of his hat but Rumple turned it down because the hat only travelled between lands with magic. Bae was in a land with magic. Rumple turned down a means to finding his son without realising it.
All magic comes with a price!

Agreed. It’s a terrible irony. And for me it brings up the question of did Blue know what would happen? Did she know that Rumple would make the wrong choice and thus the bean/portal would change Neal’s destination and take him to NL, since he was now an orphan? In the original Disney Pinocchio film the opening song makes reference to the Blue Fairy being Fate
Fate is kind
She brings to those to love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longingLike a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you throughhttp://www.elyrics.net/read/d/disney-lyrics/when-you-wish-upon-a-star-lyrics.html
Some food for thought!
