So… admittedly I think that it could go either way, but I had a conversation with a friend regarding a rather laughable theory, and thought I would share. I’ll just tell it like it happened.
“I think it’s possible that Rumplestiltskin didn’t remember who he was until Emma came to town. “
“Oh yeah?”
” I only have two things to base that on. One was that he was really adamant about getting Emma’s name from Snow White in the beginning – and also in the pilot episode he had on this really awful blue and white checkered shirt, and now he only wears solid colors. So maybe someone was like “Don’t let him wear that shirt again.” or maybe it means he remembered and thought “Oh God what is in my closet?””
“Hahaha. I love either of those possibilities.”
“How long have I been wearing these awful clothes!? Nooooo”
“I’m sorry but you’re fired from the costuming department. That shirt was so bad people are forming theories around it.”
Also, it’s obvious from Regina’s reaction to Mr. Gold using the word “Please” that he didn’t before Emma came. You could argue that he was bidding his time, and didn’t want to show his hand until the “final battle” was to begin. However, he uses the word for things like “Let’s stop talking now” and “Sit down” and I honestly don’t see the strategic advantage in that.
Whatever. What do you think?

In the second episode, Regina suspected him finding Henry wasn’t a coincidence, and that he wanted Emma to come. He didn’t confirm it, but he definitely implied that it was indeed part of his plan.
Also, normal people wouldn’t hold on to a broken tea cup if they had no idea how special it was. They would probably just throw it away, and yet for some reason he kept it for 28 years.
I know that the writers said he remembered upon hearing Emma’s name, but some things still don’t make sense to me if that is the case.

Maybe everytime he picked it up he felt the urge to keep it. Maybe his love was so powerful that it broke through the curse. We see that with Charming and Snow. They couldn’t be together, but they couldn’t be apart, either. They’re love was strong enough to at least to fight the curse, even when they didn’t know they were fighting it.

I agree.
May 24, 2012 at 10:02 pm #147665the_saviorParticipantIs it confirmed that Rumpel was the one that gave Henry to Regina, because that would be the only flaw I could see in him not remembering the curse.
I am fine with him holding on to a teacup, perhaps fake memories were placed there to make him hold for it for so long, especially for sentimental value, but like everyone else, him giving Henry to Regina is very coincidental. haha
May 24, 2012 at 11:50 pm #147666darcyfarrowParticipantI have two possible explanations.
1. While in FTL, Rumple planted certain thoughts so deep into his psyche that the curse couldn’t blot them out. One was the tea cup (so he wouldn’t forget Belle) and one was “find a way bring Emma to SB.”
2. The easier explanation: the idea of Henry’s adoption didn’t originate with Gold; it originated with the Blue Fairy , who then passed it on to Gold (probably very slowly and subtly so he wouldn’t even realize he was being manipulated) . As to how BF remembered Emma/Henry once she arrived in SB, maybe her magic was strong enough, or maybe she wrote the storybook and included Emma and Henry in it (and then removed that chapter before the book left her hands) .Both explanations are clumsy; it would be so much cleaner to say Gold kept his FTL memories all along.
