ParticipantDISLIKE THE ON GOING CHAT SITE ON THE FORUM
WHY YOU ASK… in the past there we had a lot of interesting discussions on the forum. The threads were posted and we had ongoing discussions that stayed put and could be reviewed.
Now we have the chat sites… a lot of interesting conversations occur there but they disappear AND if you leave you will not be able to find the same information or conversation again. The forum is getting kind of static and boring … fewer theories posted …. and not as many posts as there use to be because all the conversation is going on in the chat site.
Any thought on my complaints….
Nonnie
I do like the chat site on the live site during the podcast recording then it adds to the atmosphere of the recordings.

KeymasterI wholly and completely disagree.
When someone comes up with a theory I ask them to post it in a thread for all to read. We constantly bring up threads and post our thoughts and if someone has a thought but doesn’t want to post, I do it for them. I’ve started many threads with “so we were chatting in the chat tonight.” These forums are NEVER boring. We post every spoiler we find. And then discuss it to death, just like we always have. But sometimes the talk also takes places in the chat.
And most importantly, we’ve become a real community through that chat. Before, we would just talk in the forums and it was all ONCE all the time. Now we chit chat and we’ve really gotten to know each other. We’re all FRIENDS now not just forum posters. If Daniel got rid of this chat, I would be unbelievably upset as would the many regulars who talk here every single day for hours at a time.

ParticipantI’m on the fence. From what I’ve seen out of the corner of my eye, most of the time if anything of interest is discussed, people usually go make a thread about it so that it ISN’T lost. I can totally understand feeling like you’ve missed a lot (I have to miss it 99% of the time, this browser stopped letting me have access to the box to type in and I haven’t been able to fix it yet/don’t like going to the other one), but since the preview function is still on the fritz, you can post something and by the time you have, 3 other replies show up saying the same thing or pointing out things you want to comment on.
The on-going chat can be entertaining and veer off into non-ouat things too but I enjoy peeking over and seeing if there’s new stuff posted that people are excited about. It’s a nice way to point out new stuff without constantly refreshing like I normally do.
Wish I could join in on the chat more. I feel more distanced just posting in the threads, especially since I end up writing a book instead of having an actual discussion about something. (Writer’s curse, sorry guys!). I may try to pop in more on it but I think it’s a positive thing for now. Plus it gets some of the crazy hairbrained ideas out of the way that lead to some really interesting discoveries that I love reading about in the threads later on!
I imagine (when it’s working which it seems to be for everyone but me *sigh*) that it’s also a great way for people who are super excited about something to have a chance to fangirl/boy together for a minute rather than waiting on long responses and hoping people see the threads. It’s nice not feeling alone when something major happens or new pictures are out or a juicy spoiler you want to discuss.
Like I said, it sucks to miss everything that happens while you’re gone so I totally get the point, but I feel like every time I look over, somebody’s saying “go start a thread about that” or “hey guys I just started a thread here about this: (insert link)” so it’s the best of both worlds.
Mine tends to freeze up until I refresh but again, that’s just my browser being stupid even though it worked when the new forums first started (go figure). But what little I’ve been able to use it / glance over and read I’ve genuinely enjoyed it. Not every little fangirl squeel needs to be documented for posterity, making the threads go on and on and on making it harder to catch up. Right now it doesn’t seem like there’s an option to select a page to go to so you can only go back a page at a time and trust me, in long threads, you don’t want to have to go backwards that far.
Curious to see what others say since I haven’t been able to actively do much but read chat when I’m around but I know a dedicated group use it and they’ve come up with some awesome stuff they’ve then posted about so I imagine it’s fairly popular with those who spend a lot of time on this site (like myself – I would totally use it more if I didn’t have to switch browsers *throws something*).

KeymasterNot for nothing but as the person who has to read EVERYTHING, I can assure you that I am reading just as much as I always was. There is never a day where I’m not reading, responding, posting theories/spoilers, and moderating the chat. It’s not like with the chat we’re all suddenly doing the chat and posting anything. A lot of times people want to test runt theories in the chat before they post to see if it has any weight. If it’s something that is instantly dismissed as not possible, then there is no NEED to post it and that helps our servers.

What RG said!

ParticipantI chat regularly and I have to agree with RG that most of what we talk about is always in the threads, too. We interact with both and it’s a lot of crossover. We also talk about a lot of non-Once related things.
For example, we were joking in chat about poetry and someone made up a quick poem about Once and so I made a thread about it and in a few hours that thread is now three pages long. If we hadn’t been chatting it would never have been brought up.
Also, it’s just a great way to bounce stuff back and forth on each other. You have an idea or forget what happened in an episode, just give a shout and then it’s usually posted in the threads.
All I can say is very little of what we chat about isn’t in the threads. And I would be very upset if the chat room were to go bye-bye. In fact, I post more now than I ever did. It gets the creative juices flowing and I think we actually are posting more for the people that are here.
But I have noticed that we haven’t gotten back a lot of people from last season that used to post. I don’t know why that is, but for the regular posters I think we do more than ever before.

ParticipantNonnie, I felt like you do at first. I found it scrolled fast, and although I type super quick, it can be hard to keep up sometimes. Yet it does lend itself to more casual conversation than the formality of organized essays and thoughts. Plus all the fun code we can use to change size/color of text makes me feel like I have magic .
MysteryKat: I’m prone to very long posts too. Every time I create a wall of text, I think of Mark Twain.

Thanks, that just made my day. Also – big shout out, cookies, and apologies for long-windedness to RG who has to read everything, whether she approves of all opinions or not!
Also – I am totally bitter I don’t even get to use the chat feature most of the time. Can’t imagine it being gone though and I love the threads that start with “so we were discussing in chat” – that means somebody actually found it valid enough to post and it was a collaborative effort and/or approved. I love that about this Oncer community. We analyze everything to death and combined, come up with some totally awesome ideas.

ParticipantI agree completely with RG. The chat has been a nice edition to the site. I don’t get chance to discuss Once with anybody in my social circle, I’m the only one I know who watches it, so it’s nice to be able to come on here and just talk Once without having to wait hours for a response. I would really miss the chat if it went. Since the chat has been available, I do feel that I am more a part of the Once community whereas before, there wasn’t a sense of that.

ParticipantI don’t read the chat but I have nothing against it. I avoid it mainly because it contains spoilers, which I try to avoid. In fact, I usually zoom my browser view so that the right hand side of the page containing the chat window isn’t even visible on the screen. That way I can stay spoiler-free while others are free to enjoy the chat. I also tend to avoid all chats wherever I encounter them, but that’s just me. Those that are reasonably active scroll so quickly that I find it difficult to read quickly enough to keep up, let alone compose any kind of reply. This is aggravated by the fact that the need for rapid typing leads people to use a great many abbreviations and to often throw spelling, grammar, and punctuation to the wind. Put all these conditions together, and I find it very difficult to decipher most chats. So, I’m glad to hear that many of the topics discussed are showing up here in the forums where I can encounter them at my own leisurely pace. Here’s hoping both media stay active.
