Guess most of you have watched a number of Disney fairy tale movies. Was wondering, what your favorites are, if you have any. But want to go beyond Disney here. There are other shows and movies with fairy tale stories, not just those having been in theaters this year. And to go even beyond this, want to include fantasy, so not just fairy tales of the classical kind, but even something like the Star Wars movies (I do count that as new, modern fairy tale, most certainly it’s not science fiction) or shows like Hercules and Xena, and some supernatural shows about werewolves and vampires and alike. (it is somewhat difficult to draw a line, what is fantasy, what is fairy tale, what is not, what is partially, what is something totally different)
So, what are your favorite fairy tale / fantasy movies? What are your favorite fairy tale / fantasy TV shows (besides Once upon a Time, assume it’s a favorite show of pretty much everyone on here)? And maybe there are movies or shows, that might not be your favorite, but you think, more people should know about?
But, to keep things practical here, name only 10 favorite shows or movies, and additional 2, which have been overlooked so far and deserve a broader audience in your opinion.
My list (no particular order):
1. Robin Hood (1973) – the animated film produced by Disney, the first movie I watched in theater (when it first came to theaters, I am that old)
2. The Dark Crystal – a good story but maybe even more interesting the work with puppets
3. Lord of the Rings, movie trilogy
4.Drei Nüsse für Aschenbrödel (Three Nuts for Cinderella) – a Czechoslovak fairy-tale film from 1973, airs every Christmas in Germany, it’s cult here.
5. Catweazle – does anybody else here remember this UK show from the 70s?
6. Beauty and the Beast – the show running from 1987-1990, with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, not the new one
7. Xena: Warrior Princess
8. Wolf Lake – a short lived TV show about a town of werewolves from 2001
9. Charmed
10. Lost Girl11. The Adventure of Prince Achmed – and animated feature film from the era of silent film, from 1926 by Lotte Reiniger – if you ever get a chance to watch it with live orchestra do it (it’s maybe a once in a lifetime chance). The kind of animation Reiniger used here, silhuette animation (it was a speciality of Reiniger) inspired the animated sequence in Harry Potter The Deathly Hallows part 1, known as the Tale of the Three Brothers.
12. Arabela – another production from Czechoslovakia, from 1979. In Germany it was known under the title “Die Märchenbraut” (the fairy tale bride). Once Upon a Time is not the first TV show in the this world bringing characters from the realms of fairy tales into our modern world andeven the other way around. Don’t know if this show has ever been shown for example in the US, Canada or even the UK, but nevertheless mention it here. So, what are you shows or movies?

Hocus Pocus- Is it bad that I wanted the witches to win?
The Lost Boys- Again, is it bad that I wanted the vampires to win?
I liked the Buffy the vampire television series. It could do serious but also had a good dose of humour.
Harry Potter- I was at the right age to enjoy it. Were I older or younger, I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much.
Pirates of the Caribbean- Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, what more neeeds to be said?
All magic comes with a price!

I saw Buffy when I was eight years old and loved that show so much (almost as much as I love Once… when I tell people about Once, I say “It’s the new Buffy” and then they get how much I love it)…
So…
I liked a lot of the WB stuff… so my list would be like…Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Roswell, Dark Angel…
Harry Potter, Hunger Games…
Firefly…Favourite Disney movies have always been Mulan, Little Mermaid, Aladdin….
And I saw the Lion King broadway show and fell in love with it as well 🙂
That’s probably more than 10… 😉

I loved Roswell and Buffy too! 😀 They are streaming on Netflix and I recently watched them both. They still hold up today.

I promise that if Hook does an “As you wish” I will ship him, but no sooner.
And
vs
I ship Rumpel… Surprise? Think not…
What else?
The Storyteller from Jim Henson Studios too. Absolutely Fantastic
Fantaghiro aka Cave of the Golden Rose… Italian fairy tale, but there are english versions out there, invisibly voiced over. Talk about kick-ass princesses, Snow could get tips from Fantaghiro.February 22, 2013 at 4:13 pm #174845KebParticipantOh, goodness, where does one even start with this? Of course, I tended to prefer the books in most cases…
1. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Hands down, my all time favorite movie.
2. The Wizard of Oz…though this is a case where I love the books even more than the movie.
3. The Black Cauldron. (Books are way better though.)
4. Labyrinth deserves a nod here.
5. Spaceballs. I actually liked it better than Star Wars as a kid. Sure, it’s a spoof, but it’s got its own story and characters.
6. I’ll put Harry Potter on here, but I still have yet to see the final movies. (And the books were, again, better.)
7. Rainbow Brite. A childhood obsession, but the cartoons/movies still hold up when I go back to them now. And that was a fascinating fantasy world–wish that they could have created more than they did.
8. Going Postal. Based on Terry Pratchett’s novel, which is part of the Discworld series. (Can you tell I like reading?) Pratchett is one of the best fantasy authors alive, and I highly recommend the books. But the 2-part TV movie they made for it (which last I saw is on Netflix) is totally worth watching in its own right.
9. Ella Enchanted. (Book’s better. Still, they made a good movie out of it–a very different movie in some respects, but solid.)
10. Avatar: The Last Airbender. The cartoon series, not the movie, which sucked all the life out of the characters. How is it possible to take something that epic and fail that hard? But anyway, it was brilliantly done all over the place.Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. The Princess Bride – It’s just Hillarious
Hogfather – Terry Pratchett’s Discworld seriesGood always wins < That's just what Rumplestiltskin wants you to think Keeper of Belle's Theme Music, The Queen of Hearts Maze, Cora's Missing Heart,Tiny's Golden Harp

Indeed fantastic.
Fantaghiro – geee, totally have forgotten about that one.Nice to learn about some movies, shows haven’t seen yet, as well as be reminded of movies, shows I somewhat have forgotten about (what is not a judgement about their quality).
