The actor who plays Doctor Whale has stated that his character will be revealed on the Halloween special and is quite a dark character that being the reason why he jumped at the chance to play it.
The episode is also called “The Doctor”We know Dr Whale doesn’t seem a bad individual but he has have something slightly dark in him, seen through his lechy ways towards women in Storybrooke, basically he’s a nice guy on average but not totally nice is what the writers are saying.
He has made comments in the past as being “a hell of a Doctor” as well as leading a town mob to kill Regina, just as Doctor Frankenstein led a a town mob to destroy the Monster he created. When Regina said listening to you has caused us enough suffering probably refers to how he went about creating the monster, perhaps with permision of the townsfolk at first.
The reason no one recognises him, because he spends most of his time in his lab, and why he didn’t want to reveal his identify, because he is ashamed of it.
All this is speculation of course and there’s one key component missing, why the name WHALE, that doesn’t link it.
Google who directed/created Frakenstein the original film. The man who directed (another word for created) Frankenstein (1931) was james WHALE

So, case closed?

In the story of Frankenstein, Dr Frankenstein leads a town lynch mob to go and destroy the monster he created. In this episode Dr Whale leads a town lynch mob to go and kill Regina. Also Regina saying the town had “suffered enough listening to you” was probably a hint. The reason he didn’t want to give his identity is because he is ashamed of what he did, and the reason that they don’t recognize him is probably because he spends so much time in his lab.
I think the name link is probably the best clear link. james WHALE directing/creating Frankenstein. DR Whale = Dr Frankenstein.

Oh, I got that part from your post. I just meant while watching the episode, I didn’t make the connection that Dr. Frankenstein was leading the mob. But I do remember that part of the story.
How is Regina not wanting to listen to him talk linked to Frankenstein? I’m not really making that connection. I guess I only assumed it was establishing that they are linked to each other and had past dealings…

This bit hasn’t got evidence, it’s just speculation.
He said barely 2 sentences to her and she replied “Listening to you has caused this town enough suffering” of course it’s meant to look like she’s referring to him there on her porch, but considering he didn’t say that much, I just got the impression she was referring to something else. If he were Frankenstein, it would be an allusion to him creating the monster that plagued the town.
My personal theory is that he’s not from Fairytale land, but from another realm, because Frankenstein isnt a fairytale, its a horror story. let’s call it Horror Land, I think she may have found a way, possibly Jefferson’s hat to bring him to the fairytale realm, hoping he could revive David, when he failed, she probably refused to send him back, hence why he got caught in the curse, and doesn’t recognise Charming as his Prince. This whole paragrah is just my personal guess, I don’t have evidence to back it up, unlike the Dr Whale = Dr Frankenstein theory.
October 2, 2012 at 5:19 pm #155138lilredParticipantHe definitely isn’t from Enchanted Forest. The idea of having a Horror Land has me thinking of Nightmare Before Christmas’ Halloweentown – so his ‘prince’ could be some version of Jack: the Pumpkin king.
I guess there was a movement that Whale could be some god from mythology – explaining the god complex/being creepy around mortal women…
But I like the Dr. Frankenstein theory better – has a strong basis and seems very exciting!
Off to look at the doors inside the hat again!

If he had given life to a creature (Frankenstein’s Monster) giving life to something probably would give you a God complex.
Possibly going one step further, what if Frankenstein’s Monster IS David, he told Regina he could bring him back and sort of succeeded, but as a monster, who caused havoc on the land, hence Regina’s comment “listening to you has caused us enough suffering” Presumably the mob led by Dr frankenstein killed the David/monster. Again pure speculation in this paragraph no evidence.
October 2, 2012 at 5:44 pm #155141mikeParticipantIf, he is Victor Frankenstein (that’s Fronk-en-steen), then the twist will be that his creation was a female, a mate for him. It could explain his issues with women.
